The Barony of Glyn Dwfn welcomes ALL to the 10th Annual Tain Bo! We will be at a new site this year with lots of space! As always, Tain Bo will have something for everyone: Armored combat, archery, rapier, cut & thrust, arts & sciences competitions, classes, the popular Mead Meet, and much more.  As this is our 10th year, all branches are eligible to compete for the coveted Tain Bo Banner, including the branch that won last year – the branch that wins will get to keep the banner forever!

This year, being our 10th Anniversary, we are going bigger and better than ever! We will have guests from all over the Knowne World joining us, including friends from the Barony of Carraig Ban, the Barony of Allyshia, the Barony of Arn Hold and more. Their Majesties of An Tir will be in attendance and will be bestowing well deserved awards unto the populace, including at least 2 peerage elevations.
As we are much further out of town as in the last few years, we will not be having the large, free public market. However, we will still happily be having merchants. Please note that merchant applications are now closed.

We can’t wait to see you!!

Other Important Details:

  • The site is pet friendly. Please make sure your pet is leashed and under your control at all times. Please pick up and dispose of waste promptly and properly
  • At this time, fire is allowed, both wood and propane, so long as your fire is self contained within a fire pit or other vessel (in other words, please do not dig holes in the fields to build a fire) and you keep a fire extinguisher or water close by to douse the flames as necessary
  • The site is a working farm. The ground is uneven, there is horse manure and gopher holes and there may be nails or other sharp items especially nearest the bon fire area and debris near the road. Walking barefoot is NOT recommended

Meal Information

As this is a remote area, guests should plan for their own meals and to shop for food and necessities in either Klamath Falls or Ashland.

Ashland is about 30 minutes away down Dead Indian Memorial Road (I know, its awful and many have tried to get it changed. Please note this road is slow going and very curvy/mountainous but the most efficient way down to Ashland from site) including an Albertson’s, Safeway, Food Co-Op, and other options.

Klamath Falls is 55 minutes from site (on a less windy road) and includes a Fred Meyer, Natural Grocers, Holiday Market, Albertson’s, and other options.

As a reminder, wood and propane fires are allowed at Tain Bo X so long as they are self contained (please do not dig holes in the property owners ground).

Friday, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Rapier Pistol Duels (Town Square – List Field 1)

Two combatants will each be given a rubber band gun. Marshal will call out ten paces then combatants must turn and take their shot. Each successful kill with an RBG is worth a coin. Combatants do not need to be rapier authorized to compete – you can borrow loaner gear from the marshals if you do not have your own.

Saturday, 10:00 am – 11:30 am: All Beef Running of the Bulls Rapier Relay (Town Square – List Field 1)

Round 1: Torro, Torro! Fighters will engage the Bull, who has two horns affixed to their mask. The combatant will score 3 coins if they knock a horn off the Bull without dying, 2 coins if they knock a horn off with an injury, and 1 coin if they knock a horn off as they are also killed. No coins scored if they die first. (The Bull will be given foam horns for their mask and then will swap with their opponent for each round) fighters must use a cloak or no offhand. Bulls fight case.

Round 2: Udderly Ridiculous! Fighters will engage a single opponent and only torso shots count. The round lasts 1 minute and fighters can score up to six hits each on their opponent, worth 1 coin apiece.

Round 3: Cow Tipper! A small cow figurine will be placed at 30 feet approximately from a starting line, and each fighter will have up to 3 shots with their rubber band gun to tip the cow over using only their shots. A tipped cow is worth 3 coins.

Saturday, 8:00 am – 9:00 am: Class – Fighters Under Pressure (see class section for details)

Saturday, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Cattle Rustlin’ Rapier Melee (Melee Field)

Several cows will be out in the field ripe for the pickin’. Your team of 3 is trying to acquire as many cows as you can in your pen by the end of this 30 minute scenario. A cow requires two hands to be moved and cows can only be walked to the pen – either one person using both hands or two people using one hand each on the cow. Once a cow is in the pen it can be counted – but wait, you can steal cows from someone else’s pen! The cow cannot be used as an offhand, and must be dropped if you’re engaged. Every team will gain a coin for each cow in their pen at the end of this scenario. Resurrections happen at your pen, on a 60 second count after dying. Large cows are worth 3 coins, small cows are worth 1 coin.

Saturday, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Double Round Robin Tournament (Town Square – List Field 1)

Entrants may use a single offhand when defending the field but must swap offhands to attack the field. The top 4 from the pool will advance to a double elimination bracket with best 2 out of 3 matches. Each successful win during the semifinals and finals will be worth 1 coin.

Cut & Thrust Combat

Friday, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Cut & Thrust Poker Tournament (Town Square – List Field 2)

Each participant will be given 5 random cards from a playing deck. After each fight, the winner will exchange one card from their hand with a card from their opponent’s hand. At the end of the allotted time, the person with the best hand wins.

Friday, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Cut & Thrust 2 vs 2 Tournament (Melee Field)

round robin tournament, as determined by number of fighters and teams.

Saturday, 8:00 am – 9:00 am: Class – Fighters Under Pressure (see class section for details)

Saturday, 10:00 am – 11:00 am: Armor as Worn Tournament (Town Square – List Field 2)

Round robin tournament where the armor you are wearing provides proof or resistance against certain types of strikes. In this tournament leather is proof against a tip or a draw cut, but not a percussive cut or a thrust, chain is proof against cuts but not a thrust, plate will be proof against cuts and thrusts but not two handed thrusts.

Saturday, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Treasure Chest Tournament (Town Square – List Field 2)

Each participant brings something to seed the treasure chest as an entry fee, the winner gets to choose from the chest first, the second place goes next, and so on until everyone has had a pick in the chest.

Saturday, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm: Cut & Thrust Grand Melee (Melee Field)

We will have a grand melee for Cut & Thrust, doing several scenarios! We will also have space for pick up fighting.

Saturday, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm: Glyn Dwfn Cut & Thrust Championship Tournament (Town Square – List Field 2)

The tournament to determine the next champion of Cut & Thrust in Glyn Dwfn will be either a double elimination bracket or round robin tournament, dependent on number of entrants. Fighters will bring their best, with the finals being best 3 of 5 in Single Sword

Calligraphy- Carolingian
Barn 1
Instructor – HE Taliesin ap Hafgari

Carolingian, dating to the 8th C was created by Alcun of York through the patronage of Charlemagne.  Charlemagne wanted a standarized script that was easy to read and especially easy to write.  Carolingian has genuine ascenders and descenders making it the first real minisucule hand.  It was commonly used in early period manuscripts often with Uncial letterforms used for Capitals where required.  As a result of its clarity and beauty it lasted as a primary hand for several centuries before evolving into the compressed, angularized Gothic.

Students will be introduced to the basic Carolingian alphabet and how to form each of the letters of the alphabet. Suitable for teens through adults.  Open to younger youth if they are comfortable writing or printing a basic alphabet.

Not recommended for youth under 10 years of age.

Calligraphy – Blackletter – Textura Quadrata
Barn 1
Instructor – HE Taliesin ap Hafgari

Instructor’s Note to ALL students.  Texture Quadrata can be a challenging class for new calligraphers.  You are always very welcome to attend and participate but it is important that you understand it may be challenging.

By the early 13th C the Early Gothic forms had evolved into a non-cursive, angular hand known as Blackletter, Textura Quadrata (or Old English).  The name indicates the woven appearance of the lines of text, “textura” meaning ‘an even effect in weaving’.  (Art of Calligraphy, Harris, D 50).

This hand is noteworthy for its lack of letter, word and linear space.  All were kept to an absolute minimum creating the overall textural effect for manuscripts and other documents.

One suggestion is that these Gothic hands developed out necessity because of the increase costs and lack of available paper in Northern Europe (the primary manufacturers and suppliers were located in Italy and other Southern European countries who closely guarded their product and their markets.)

Suitable for youth (9 – 11), teens (12 – 14) through adults.  Youth and teens need to be accompanied by an adult and comfortable writing or printing a basic alphabet.  Not recommended for youth under 9 years of age.

Supplies, tools etc. will be provided by the instructors.  For this class the instructor will provide chisel nib felt pens for use in the class.  Students are welcome to bring their own pens, ink and paper if they prefer to use a regular nib.  A C-2 Speedball nib of its equivalent is recommended.
