Tournament Information

Bardic Championship

Come all who would vie for the title of Summits Bardic Champion! All paid members 18 and up, who are residents of the Summits, are invited to put forth their name and skills in this tournament, to be held on February 9th.

*Each competitor should prepare three pieces- two for the main portion of the tournament, and one additional piece should you be called into finals. All forms of bardic arts are welcome, including but not limited to song, storytelling, and dance.
You may choose to do all the same style of bardic arts for your entry, or vary your pieces between different bardic arts- a song for one piece and a dance for another piece, for example.

*Basic documentation should be provided- 30 seconds or less of verbal explanation will suffice. (When/where is the piece from? If original, when/where is it modeled after? Why did you choose it? Any other interesting tidbits about it?) Pieces may be original or historical, period or SCA-appropriate.

*As one of the purposes of a bard is to entertain, elements like eye contact and showmanship are to be considered.

*Since only one person will be named champion, this is an individual tournament- that is, any accompaniment your pieces require must be performed live by you, not anyone else.

*Pieces will be judged on technical ability, delivery/performance quality, and overall impression.

Alpine Scholar Competition

Alpine Scholar competition requirements

What do you need to do to enter?
A Letter of Intent
Provide Letter of Intent to their Highnesses by or at Winter Investiture. This letter should give an idea of the three entries you plan to enter. Try to find a range of entries so that you can really show off what you can do. This letter of intent can take any form and you encouraged to be creative. If however, you plan to make a big carved rock your letter of intent, please plan accordingly and bring your own brute squad to present to their Alpine Highnesses. Please see Master Tryggr for ideas.

Three entries
Your three entries should show your range of ability or show a deep knowledge of a single field. For instance, to show a range of abilities, you could enter a costume item, a forged metal item, and a food item. Or if you would like to show depth of knowledge in a single field, you could enter a research paper, a recreation of a medieval thing, and an experimental interpretation of another and similar medieval thing.

Now, about that documentation 500-pound Gorilla in the room. Don’t be afraid, my dear Padawan. You aren’t expected to turn in a doctoral dissertation, unless that is your jam. The point of documentation is to show your work and your sources and why the thing you made is medieval. It doesn’t have to be any longer than it has to be. In fact, shorter, succinct documentation is preferred. Unless writing that dissertation is your bliss in which case the other artsy geeks would LOVE to read it. So don’t be afraid to write documentation. There are many people who would love to help you.

If you are writing a research paper, please send them to me by 12th Night. Research papers take longer to score than other entries, so we like to have them well in advance.

Scoring
We will use the kingdom rubric and judging criteria as a starting point. We may revise the forms slightly, but you should be considering entering kingdom at some point. Entering Summits A&S championship is great practice before going Big League.

We will also have single entry. This is a great opportunity to get feedback.

Come set up a display or just come to the event to support our artisans. It’s a lot of fun to listen to the talks on the wide range of subjects. So come get your artsy geek on, babay!
