Madrone is hosting a Spring Colloquium on 16 March, full of A&S classes, project making, and socializing for all! As with previous colloquiums, we will be at Saint Andrew’s Church in Bellevue.

Our class schedule contains classes from music to medicine to martial equipment, geared towards both newer SCAdians and SCAdians wishing to explore new areas of learning and making. We are also hosting a swap meet for garb, equipment, and armor, so take a look through your SCA closet as we approach the summer season and see what you no longer need.
The social room has some space to spread out, so bring a current project and play and socialize! There will be a painting table (materials provided) and a general A&S crafts table, and we hope to have a table set aside for your larger projects like cutting out a dress.

This event is free to attend, however it costs the barony almost $200 to rent the site so there will be a donation box, and we hope those who can, will donate to help defray expenses. Doors open at 10am (set-up at 9am) and close at 5pm. Garb is optional.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This site does not allow alcohol or weapons of ANY kind. All rattan and steel must be left in the car, and booze should be left at home. Robinswood Park is right next door if folks want to step out for a bit to discuss weapons or demonstrate fighting techniques.
No pets.  Genuine Service animals only please.

Classes Offered

CLASS SCHEDULE ABOVE.

Period Music and where to find it – Taught by Lady Matilda Stoyle

What did music sound like in the Middle Ages and Renaissance? Let’s talk about what we know about music of the past, and its rediscovery during the Early Music revival. We’ll discuss good sources to get modern sheet music to play or sing from and recordings to listen to. We’ll also play some examples and talk about how to listen strategically to unfamiliar types of music.

Introduction to Pewtering – Taught by Spike Zoetaert, OL

Pewtering About: How one might cast pewter items, what sorts were known historically, and why we like them.  This will be a chatty informal class.

Glue from a Rabbit & Paint from an Egg – Taught by Dame Rotrude Halfblind

This hands-on workshop will endeavor to demonstrate some of the joyful mess that is working with period paint and glue. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty!  Not Vegan or Vegetarian-friendly, though nobody should be eating anything we work with!.

Dress Up & Patterns – Taught by Spike Zoetaert, OL

Spike shows garments, along with their paper patterns, so that people can try on and copy things. Hoods, coats, shirts, doublets and more. Help converting to your measurements will be available

Introduction to Armorial Heraldry – Taught by Lord Simon Fisc

What is “armory”? How does it work in the SCA? We’ll cover the basics of designing a device (or arms, and what the heck the difference is), the submissions process, and the great question of “why should I even bother to register?”

Calligraphy Workshop – Taught by Dame Brighid MacCumhal

This will be a beginner’s overview to learn how to write in the hand Secretary Miniscule, which is a Gothic blackletter hand. This is the desired hand script of the Baronial Court of Gera and Christopher of Madrone. It was used throughout Western Europe from approximately the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries.

A Story Telling Workshop – Taught by HL Rowena Jade of the Lion Isles

This interactive workshop will get brand new storytellers started, provide beginning storytellers with tips and tricks for their storytelling toolbox and provide “continuing education” practice for experienced storytellers. Everyone has a story to tell and everyone can tell stories.

Period Maps – Taught by Baroness Bergdis Thorgrimsdottir

A class on Historical maps, and what they show us of their time and place.

Recommendations Tea –Baroness Aline Swynbroke and Lady Margaret Palmer

Tea with the Baroness, and an explanation of what the many awards are, what they mean, how to fill out forms, and chat about folks you’d like to recommend.
