This is a Level 2 event.

The Barony of Madrone will be holding competitions for the next Champions of the Arts & Sciences.   After this will be the justly famous Baronial Banquet.
The theme of the day is Ancient Roman, with an ancient Roman banquet presented by Madrone Culinary Guild.  Note: the A&S competition is not held to the Roman theme.  Also note: This year the Bardic Championship will be held at the Raging Rogue Tavern event on February 22, 2020, not in conjunction with the A&S Championship.

We’re going with a “body of work” sort of format for the A&S Championship, and instead of judging with forms we’re going to be discussing with the artisans, and looking for someone who will actively and passionately champion Arts and Sciences for the Barony of Madrone. *Note: Champions must be current SCA members.
If you’ve displayed at Athenaeum, it will be rather similar in style, though quite a bit smaller in scope. *Note: If you want to do a display, but not be actively competing, that’s totally fine! It’s great practice for Athenaeum and future competitions, and an experience I highly recommend.
Body of work can mean many things, so here’s a few examples: Last year at Athenaeum I displayed Phase 1 of a big, ongoing research project of mine. The big project is absolute slice-of-life for my persona, down to replicated bookkeeping and coinage. What I displayed was “A day in the food”, with food that I made from recipes I found that were appropriate to my persona. The emphasis there was on finding the recipes, redacting them, and physically creating the food.
Other displays included top-to-bottom production of items and showed the artifacts they were based on. Yet others showed the wide and variable range of research done and things made. There were some that showed their own progression in skill of research and reproduction, starting with (for example) that first gown made from a pattern. There were also displays showing the convergence of information they discovered from looking at ostensibly different research projects!

So, “Body of Work” leaves tons of room for interpretation.

Important Note from Baroness Spike Zoetaert: “To add to this, it is our hope that many attendees will seek out and geek out the arts championship competitors, come talk art! If you plan to compete, we hope you can let us know ahead of time, so we plan enough tables, etc. However if you arrive day of we will try to accommodate you. Champions do need to be SCA members.
