Technically this is a Level 2: Branch Event where no Kingdom or Principality business is expected to be conducted. However, her Highness Gormflaith Bernadette will be in attendance and may be giving out awards.

The Barony of Lions Gate welcomes all to a tournament to choose our next Heavy, Rapier, Thrown Weapons, and Archery Champions! Lions Gate Champions is traditionally held at Warner Loat Park, so this year the theme for the event is the Loat! We will be exploring the earliest documented history of the Loat as well as how it has evolved over the years through storytelling and artistry. Several of the Championships, such as Archery and Thrown Weapons, will incorporate this idea into the tournament. The Artists village will be a space for artists to gather, work and share their process.

We will also be holding an Arts and Sciences competition! Artisans from far and wide are encouraged to create a “Loat in any Medium.” For those of you unfamiliar with the famous creature, it is an elusive beast that roams the woods of Lions Gate! It is said to resemble a horse. Or maybe a deer. It has six legs, and four eyes and the tail of a beaver! Or maybe not… Bring your own portrayal of this mysterious creature to Lions Gate Champions!

There will be three prizes given: Populace Choice (for those new to their medium), Populace Choice (for those with more proficiency) and Laurel’s Choice! So, even if you aren’t entering, come and cast your votes for the Best Loat!

The symbol of the Loat has become intertwined with acts of service. On a smaller scale, continuing the Lions Gate tradition of service, we want to invite you try out service types and activities that you may not normally engage in with the Loat Service Challenge. You will be asked to challenge yourself to provide service and participate in a broad range of activities, from set-up and sitting gate, to the various martial disciplines, and helping out wherever possible.

“So, what can I do at Lions Gate Champions OTHER than the martial championships?”
Why there’s a whole LOAT of things to do when you are not participating in or watching competitors in HEAVY FIGHTING, RAPIER, ARCHERY OR THROWN WEAPONS!
There will be ARTISANS & MERCHANTS showcasing their work and wares! Contact Kyle Rhun Dabbs to sign up, if you haven’t already!
There will be an ARTS & SCIENCES COMPETITION with the challenge to create a LOAT in any Medium. Try your hand at competing and/or cast your vote for your favourite entry!
There will be pop-up SCRIBAL for those who want to try their hand at painting charters or hang out with other scribes! Principality charters will also be available! (Elvina is not on Facebook but you can talk to Brynja (Briony Seedhouse) for more details).
There will be CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES with Sara (Kimberlyn Weston) and possibly even YOUTH ARMOURED COMBAT, after the adults are done fighting, with Sadhbh (Angela Gallant)!
Weather permitting, there will even be DANCING on the list field before closing court (with myself and Delgrade McAllister)!
Just to clarify for those archers wishing to compete or practice at Lions Gate Champions.
***CROSSBOWS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT WARNER LOAT PARK***
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLES!
In an effort to be more environmentally conscious, there will only be a very limited amount of single use water bottles at the water station by the Erics. Instead, we will have water dispensers for your own refillable water bottles. There are also water taps in various locations on site and a water fountain outside the washrooms.

Tournament Information

HEAVY FIGHTING and RAPIER will likely both be round robin, although it depends on the number of participants.
Here are the details on the Championships for THROWN WEAPONS and ARCHERY from our dual Missile Champion, Gunnar.
Thrown Weapons Championship:
Half royal with top 3 scores moving to the final.
The Thrown Weapons final will be 5 throws with each weapon, and loats will be on each target and will be negative points.
Archery Championship:
3 stations, 6 arrows at each.
Station 1, 3D animal. 10 points for the kill zone, -5 for everything else and zero for a miss.
Station 2, stumps. 3 stumps, different sized stumps and different distances. Scoring will be 1pt, 3 pts and 5 pts.
Station 3 target face with loats. 6 arrows with royal round scoring. Negative points if you hit the loat.
Top 3 go to the final, which will be Cyneric’s favorite. We will put a spot on the target butt somewhere, and each archer will get 2 shots. The closest arrow gets a point. The first archer to 3 points wins. The spot and target will move each round.
Just to clarify for those archers wishing to compete or practice at Lions Gate Champions.
***CROSSBOWS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT WARNER LOAT PARK***

Youth and Family Activities

The children and youth’s activities tables will have an assortment of things to do.
We have colouring and activity sheets. We will also have a table to try beginners’ leather working! Hammers and stamps on a disc of leather you can take home! And markers to colour the art you make on the leather so parents don’t have to worry about clothing being stained.
Last, but not least, we will have a scavenger hunt! Figure out who the riddle wants you to find and get your passport stamped! A great way to get to know the various people in your barony!!
So, come find Sara (Kimberlyn Weston) at the children’s activities tables!

Volunteer Information

We are looking for VOLUNTEERS for set up and take down of pavillions, tables, pop-ups, the erics, as well as marshals and moving the range equipment for archery and thrown weapons.

As always, we need GATE VOLUNTEERS! (Sign-up sheet on the Facebook event page or show up Saturday morning and see Anika Styfe at Gate, however it is super helpful to have people signed up ahead of time so we know we have coverage and Anika doesn’t have to sit there ALL DAY!).
It would mean a LOAT to us to have your assistance as events do not run without volunteers like YOU!
Please CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING for even half an hour and be the first to get to greet our attendees from near and far!
NO EXPERIENCE necessary; we’re happy to train you in what’s involved!
(You do however need to be a PAID SCA MEMBER to handle cash).
Talk to Anika Styfe (Christi Frank) if you have any questions.
