War of the Ravens (2003)
July 11th 12th and 13th

Come and enjoy the warfare whilst Ravens Key tries to break free from the tyranny of Hartwood, (Yet AGAIN!!) Held in what is mundanely known as Port Alberni. Gates open at noon Friday and close?whenever. The battle begins at noon on Saturday and ends when one side is victorious

Site fee is $8 for adults; kids 15 and under $4; under 5 years of age are free

RAVEN’S WAR ARTS & SCIENCES CONTESTS (Adult) Those wishing to participate in any of the contests shall register with the troll when they arrive at the site.

1.  BEST ON-SITE REPRESENATION OF A RAVEN – PRIZE: from the Raven’s hoard
To be constructed on-site, in any medium.  Use contestant’s own materials, as well as on-site found materials.
CRITERIA:
– creativity
– use of on-site found materials
 
2. BEST VIKING SHIELD – PRIZE:  
CRITERIA:
– documentation (written or oral)
– overall presentation
– best overall creativity
 
3. BEST SWEETMEAT – PRIZE: authentic spice mixture for period cuisine (Poudre douce) with recipes. Contestants should bring enough for 36 bite-sized pieces.  In the case of tarts, tortes, cakes, etc., DO NOT CUT BEFORE JUDGING (see criteria below).  Your entry may travel in Tupperware, but should be presented in appropriate serving ware for judging. Bring cutting implements as needed.

– flavour and texture of the food
 
4. GAMES TOURNEY  – PRIZE:   Inlaid wooden chessboard Contestants will register upon arrival.  Bring your own favorite board games.  Additional board games will be available on site.  Play begins Friday 4 pm, and continues throughout the event at player’s choice, until the start of the Saturday feast.  Our scoring system allows for this great (and we trust, enjoyable) flexibility of game types and time.

RAVEN’S WAR ARTS & SCIENCES CONTESTS (Children) General notes:  On arrival at the site, parents should be sure to register their children for any contests the littles would like to enter (see the Troll).

1. BEST RAVEN’S KEY SHIELD –  PRIZE:  Owl pendant and pouch Materials will be provided.
CRITERIA:
Best representation of a Raven
Best overall creativity

2. CHILDREN’S HUNKER DOWN  – PRIZE:  Hunker Down Game set
This popular Norse game just for kids!

3. CHILDREN’S BARDIC  – PRIZE: Jester’s staff
Best story, poem or song.  Children to indicate their choice(s) when registering at Troll Booth
CRITERIA:
Clarity of speaking/singing
Quality of presentation
 
4. DRAGON’S HOARD HUNT
Follow the clues to find the dragon’s hoard, and share the wealth.

Directions to the site:  For a pictorial map to the site, email me at:  katrinaskye@yahoo.ca and ask for map.

Take the Port Alberni exit off the New Island Highway and stay on Hwy 4 (the Alberni Highway) until you reach Port Alberni.  Keep to the right.  When you come to the first set of lights turn right onto Cherry Creek Rd.  Turn left onto Cowley Rd (opposite the school) and follow it to where it turns into Best Rd. Keep going along it until you hit Kitsuksis St. where you turn right.  The next road on the left is Kingston Rd.  Go straight down Kingston and at the end you hit the private road onto the site.  Please drive slowly as there are dogs, kids potholes and a lot of dust along this road. Signs will be posted.
