Madrone Yule – A Day of Dance, Arts & Sciences & Music

The Barony of Madrone welcome our friends to enjoy a day of merriment in celebration of the Yuletide season. During the day, there will be Arts & Sciences classes and Tiny Talks, and a Day of Dance instruction.

A hospitality table (potluck) with coffee and hot water for tea will be available for all to partake of during the day, and in the early evening, we will have a Potluck feast and a Ball with live music.

Our Baroness Rauokinn encourages “Ugly Holiday Tunics” (think of period versions of ugly holiday sweaters). There will likely be accolades for creativity and visual stunning-ness, but no one is going to judge your sewing ability.

We will have a Cookie Baking Competition – two categories, medieval and modern. (See below in Tourneys). Yes, there will be prizes!

A Silent Auction to benefit Food Lifeline will be run by Dame Rotrude Halfblind. If you wish to donate an item for auction, please email thebunniez(at)gmail(dot)com with the following: Your name, Your Item, A Minimum Bid, Approximate Worth (if desired) Any other notes. Then, Bring the item to Madrone Yule!

We shall be filming and making short videos for our Baronial Social Media. Should you wish not to have your images on them, please let the videographer know. They will be asking before they start filming (with their phones). Should you prefer to have a model release on file, you can fill one out at gate or download, pre-fill them and bring them to the event.

Site Rules:

  • No open flames. Please bring battery-powered candles for ambiance.
  • There will be no dishwashing of your feast gear, especially not in the restrooms. Please bring plastic bags to take dirty dishes home.
  • No weapons are permitted, including belt knives and rattan swords.

Meal Information

We will have a hospitality table available all day where hot water, tea, coffee and other nibbles will be available for all to enjoy. We ask for small donations of bread, cheese and fruit for lunch.

Dinner will be potluck – and the challenge is to make/bring food that would have been made/eaten in the season, pre-1900s. Please bring a card or brief fact sheet saying where your dish is from, time period the dish is from and what winter seasonal items are in it (and list of allergens like nuts, garlic, gluten, etc.).

There will be a participation gift for all who enter and maybe even an award for the most interesting dish.

We will have a wall of tables and extension cords for electric warmers, hot pots and slow cookers available. Please bring serving utensils. There is a kitchen for plating and limited space in the fridge for things that need to be chilled, and very limited space for things that need to be kept warm in the ovens, so please plan accordingly.

Dessert will be cookie competition cookies (there just might be a “crowd favorite” accolade) and any potluck as well.

Please bring your own feast gear and perhaps festive table cloths and table decorations. You are also reminded not to wash your dishes in the bathroom sinks.

Alcohol: We have a banquet permit, but site rules are beer and wine only. Please be discreet.

Tournament Information

COOKIE COMPETITION!

HEAR YE! HEAR YE!
Madrone Yule draws nigh, and with it comes a competition for the honor–nay, the glory–of the Cookie Competition!
There will be two categories of judgment, Provably Period and Definitely Delicious. Both categories require an entry of one dozen individual cookies, a complete list of ingredients, and of course the name of the gentle presenting said cookies.
For Provably Period cookies, an additional requirement is the original recipe and source, whether copied by hand or machine, or the book itself brought in. We understand that “cookie” in modern understanding doesn’t always correlate directly to period treats, and simply ask that the spirit of cookies be honored.

Please bring your entries to HL Tabytha Morgan when you arrive, so they may be kept safe and readied for presentation to our fine judges; their wise, discerning and un-bribable excellencies, Margaret Palmer of Wyewood and Rauokinn of Madrone!

Youth and Family Activities

There will be a paper craft table available for all. HL Rowena Jade will teach Chinese Paperfolding and Origami. They will also be scribal type things to color like Maestra Adrianna the Fierce’s scribal bookmarks, and her Excellency Raoukinn will be bringing Krampus coloring sheets!

Volunteer Information

There are always volunteer opportunities!

  • Gate shifts
  • Retinue for Court
  • Musicians (ask for music! We have them in PDFs for download.)

Set-up & Take down:  The site has custodians that will set up tables and chairs for us – but we might need to move some for dance/court/ball – and the site has a beautiful wooden floor – that we do NOT want to scratch up.

Clean up: As usual, we strive to leave everything cleaner (if that is possible) than we got it.
