The Shire of Lionsdale invites one and all to join us for a day
of competition and celebration! On June 18 we will be holding our
Champions event where all of our Championships will be decided
including Heavy, Rapier, Archery, A&S, Bardic, and Combat
Archery.
Bardic Competition:
Summer is here, and with the hotter weather comes many a bardic
fire. This year, the Lionsdale Bardic Championship will require the
following:
A period*, or period-style** performance telling (either in
song, poetry, spoken word, or act – remember: bardic is not just
singing!) the audience about the local fair, family gathering,
field work, or a lazy summer day.
Documentation is required your performance, and can be supplied
on an index card. Your documentation will be scored using the Tir
Righ judging form.
*A period performance is defined as a song, story, or other
performance that can be documented prior to 1601. Original
compositions based on period rules of composition, original stories
based on period styles, contrafacta to a period tune, and other
such performances can be considered a period-style performance,
with the required documentation***. For example, a performer could
sing a period song with lyrics that have been re-written modernly,
tell a story from the Decameron in English, play an original tune
in a period style on recorder, or recite a modern English
translation of an Old English poem. Note that original works need
not be written by the performer, so long as the style is
documentable prior to 1601.
**An SCA-appropriate performance is any non-period performance of
an appropriate nature for an SCA Bardic event, which cannot be
documented prior to 1601 This would include things like SCA folk
songs, or traditional pieces or stories that do not break the
illusion of the Medieval & Renaissance periods.
A&S Competition
Theme: How Things Are Made
Info: This completion focuses more on the creation of your item,
and less on the item itself. The entry should consist of one item,
and a short paper describing how it would have been made in period,
how you created it modernity and what substitutions were made and
why.
This doesn’t have to be a collage level paper, it just needs to
demonstrate your knowledge of an items origins and creation and the
reasons why the entrant made changes.
I will ask that each entrant makes a short presentation as well.
Please have a simple display as well so the populace can see what
you’ve worked on!
There will be running a populace choice prize as well.
Rapier Competition
Round Robin with the top 2 advancing to a best of 3 final.
Other activities:
For other fun frivolities at Champs, there will be Porzia’s
Games of Frivolous Fun including Bocce, Kick the Cabbage (this time
with 100% more cabbage) and more!
Rough Schedule:
Gate opens 9:00AM
9:30AM – 11:00AM: Combat Archery
11:30AM – 1:00PM: Armoured
1:30PM – 3:00PM: Rapier
3:30PM – 5:00PM: Archery
5:30PM – 7:00PM: Bardic
A&S competition will be as flexible as possible and work
around schedules so competitors can compete in multiple
competitions!
BUT WAIT… THERES MORE!!!
This Year Lionsdale Champions will be providing Prizes to help
us deal with missing the 50th Year Celebration…
including 3 of the fabulous Desiree Covered Folding Chairs.
Prizes will be awarded as such… at the end of the competitions
(which wrap with Bardic) there will be an award presentation at
which time all of the champions will be drawn in a random order to
select a prize from the prize pool, including a chance at the
chairs. So, if you want to get a chair, you may want to compete
(and win) 3 competitions, as that’s the only way to be sure!
