Volunteer Information

Dame Brighid Ross has issued a challenge!

Arontius of Bygelswade Service Challenge

When: June Faire 2025
Sponsor: Wyverns of Dragons’ Laire (Wyvern: Awarded to individuals for service to the Barony of Dragon’s Laire beyond the call of duty. Current members of the order recommend selected individuals for admission to the order to the Baron and Baroness.)
Arontius of Bygelswade was much loved not only by the Barony of Dragon’s Laire, but by the Kingdom of An Tir.
He was named a Wyvern in 1994, a Pelican in 2005 and a Lion of An Tir in 2018. His entire life was dedicated to service. Within the SCA it was service to the Kingdom, the Barony and the people of Dragon’s Laire.
The Wyverns of Dragon’s Laire wish to honor the man that inspired so many of us to walk the path of service.
Arontius understood that the key to unlocking service is fellowship. Fellowship makes service a joy, as with many hands it lightens the burden and completes tasks faster and more efficiently.
We can think of no more appropriate way to honor our friend’s memory than to challenge all those who come to June Faire, the event for which he was a guiding force for over 30 years. Whether you’re a longtime participant or new to volunteering, please join us in celebrating the legacy of our friend!
To this end The Wyverns of Dragon’s Laire issue the following challenge:

Come to June Faire, assist us in demonstrating the very best of the SCA to our modern visitors. Those who meet this challenge shall be rewarded!

All who volunteer will receive a token bearing the likeness of Master Arontius of Bygelswade’s Baron’s Token on one side and be named Volunteer on the other.

Those Volunteers who commit themselves to extraordinary service at June Faire will receive one of the limited number of Haggis Tokens. Team Haggis was the name of each of Master Arontius’ teams and is represented by his beloved winged sheep.

These tokens will be awarded by Their Excellencies and the members of the Wyverns on an individual basis as the event progresses. Extraordinary service can be many things. Master Arontius exemplified extraordinary service most frequently by doing the work no one else wanted to (i.e. Load in and load out at the storage unit, break down on Sunday, helping people load in on Friday and out on Sunday, gate duty late in the evening, site inspection, manning the Chatelaine booth during public hours.)

Extraordinary service is seeing a need and filling that need without being asked, or without the event team having to herald for assistance. Extraordinary service can be quiet service, behind the scenes that few see, but service that is felt by everyone. Extraordinary Service can be seeing another volunteer that desperately needs relief and to take their place so they can take time to rest, to check on their family, or to experience some of the joy of June Faire. Extraordinary service is to show up, but not just with yourself, but with a group that then works together as a team, as friends to make the tasks fun.

So we invite the Kingdom of An Tir to join us as we challenge ourselves at June Faire, as we commit to service through the event that mattered so greatly to him, and gather Saturday evening and celebrate the extraordinary life of Master Arontius.

To sign up to volunteer, please fill out this form here:

You can volunteer during the event as well! The volunteer station will be inside the President’s Hall.
