Setting up a Blacksmith shop on a budget by Sir Devin

Start blacksmithing now for less than $100. Includes basic information on forging and a simple introduction to heat treating. Students will be able to take home a few things they made and there will be a drawing for the 2 forges created.

Pewter Casting  by Takakane

Learn how to cast small items in lead-free pewter.  We will cover medieval sources, types of pewter, melting the metal, mold materials and mold design.  After a discussion and demo, you will have the opportunity to carve a mold and cast in it.

Student Limit: 6 – the number who will actually be making a mold and using it, but any number of students can attend,

An overview of materials, tools, and safety for lampworking

Intermediate lampworking by Marika and Master Phelan

Students will be instructed in a series of basic skills, each building up the previous, to reproduce historical beads, focusing on Norse examples

Introduction to Medieval Cheese and Cheese Making Fina MacGrioghaire

Students will be given an overview of Medieval Cheese and Cheese Making as well as have the chance to prepare a simple medieval cheese. They will also be introduced to cheese making techniques and equipment, and they will receive recipes to take home and try their hand at cheese making.

Carving Soapstone Bowl by Baroness Gudrun

How to rough out a small soapstone bowl using hand tools.

Carolingian Calligraphy by Talesin

Carolingian Calligraphy dates from the 8’th Century, created by Alcun of York through the Patronage of Charlemagne. Carolingian has real ascenders and decenders making it the first truly miniscule hand. It was commonly used in early period manuscripts often with Unical Capitals. As a result of its clarity and beauty it lasted as a primary hand for centuries. Students will be introduced to the basic Carolingian alphabet and how to form each of the letters of the alphabet.

What to wear/bring: Materials will be provided by the instructor, but students are welcome to bring their own pens, nibs, and paper if they prefer to use a regular nib. A Speedball C-2 nib, or its equivalent is recommended.

Making of Oak Gall Ink:by HL Tallesin

Using Oak Galls students will learn, in a very hands-on experience, how to process Oak Galls to make a periodesque ink using a period recipe. At the end of class each student will have oak gall ink to take home with them

Byzantine Embellishment by Masteritsa Rannveig

Byzantine wealth and opulence. Embellishment and influence in extant fashion and style. Gathering suitable bezants and plaques, studs, bangles, pearls, and beads. Tools used.  Making functional samples.

Guilding Ivy Leaves/Making Gesso by Dame Tamlyn

This is a two part class. Part one (sometime Saturday) will be the technique of applying lead gesso ivy leaves to a support and will conclude with a demo of making a non-toxic batch of gesso (similar to lead based gesso except with a titanium dioxide substitute – dry ingredients for gesso are more susceptible to spreading than the wet form). Part two (Sunday am) will be burnishing and applying gold leaf to the ivy leaves of Part one. Class participants may take home a couple of the non-toxic gesso tablets.

This class explores the painting techniques used in 12th-13th Century Bestiaries.

Introduction to Italian Pasta by Fina

This class will discuss the different kinds of pasta that were being made and eaten in Italy during period. The students will have the opportunity to make, and possibly taste test, different varieties of Italian pasta. The class will also discuss pasta making tools, and students will be given recipes to make their own pasta at home.

Dyeing linen with old world plants by HL Una of Grimwith

In this class we will be discussing some of the history and challenges of dyeing linen using old world plants and mordant. You will learn how to dye large pieces of linen fabric without streaking. You will also dye multiple samples with different dye and mordant to see the effect that various mordant have on each dye color. Each student will leave with their own samples, a basic knowledge of how to dye using the plants/ mordant available in the old world and sources for plant dyes, mordant and information. This is a “hands on” class and these dyes will stain you and your clothing please dress accordingly and bring Playtex gloves.  This class is not appropriate for smalls as some of the components can be toxic.

Spindle turning on the pole lathe by Master Ulfred

Demonstrate making turned spindles (stool legs, Spurtles, Nostepinnes, …) with some opportunity to try it out. Interactive session. Basic introduction to using the spring pole lathe, targeted for non-turners.

Bowl carving w/ axe, knife and gouge by Master Ulfred

Making a bowl from green wood using axe, knives and gouges and a few other tools. Aimed at folks with little or no experience with the process. Mostly demonstration and discussion.

Making a butter mold with wedged mortise and tenon joinery. By Master Ulfred

Participatory class, wherein, we will attempt to guide the students in producing a Scandinavian butter mold. No tools required, but if you have a coping saw bring it along.

Beginning Fabric Stamping By HL Ionamyst

In this class you will learn to use fabric stamps. We will discuss pigment options, how to set your image, types of fabric choices, and prep. There will be finished garments to view and fabric available for your practice. If you’re feeling especially brave you may purchase a 3X5 lino block and begin carving a small image. Note the 3×5 size limitation to your image.

What to wear/bring: Pigment will be used, bring an apron or wear something you don’t mind getting paint on (for eternity). If you are interested in carving a lino block bring an image small enough to fit on a 3×5 block. Simplicity of design makes for an easier carving. Bring a chair.

A Simple Bronze Age Spiral Brooch By HL Triona

You will learn about the significance of the spiral through the ages as well as simple techniques to make your own brooch.

Veils and how to wear them By HL Elisabeth Catesby and Baroness Elfreda

Why bother with a veil? They are difficult to put on, impossible to keep on, and anyway there are no exant examples so how can we know how they were really constructed? Isn’t it easier to braid your hair, or just wear it loose? In this class we will teach you how to wear your veil and how to keep the thing on. We will provide you with a linen veil ready to hem. And we will teach you a nifty period way to hem your veil.

A Guide to Late Period Turkish Dance: By Selawan

In this class we will explore late period dance in the Ottoman empire age. This is a hands on, body on class which will include a handout. As we dance, we will talk about and listen to musical instruments used at the time, garb worn by dancers of the period and how characters on pieces of art made during the Ottoman Empire can show us how to move our bodies!
