Meal Information

We are tentatively planning to have multiple removes, so small plates for snacking to encouraging mingling and participating in the events, and so everyone has a chance to enjoy some food, rather than a single, sit-down meal.

Our Feast Steward, her Grace Hlutwige, is currently working on specifics, and we will update as we have more information.  A rough idea of what we are looking at is:

  • Brunch remove – brunchy items, pastries, coffee and tea
  • Early tea remove – charcuterie, small sandwiches, general hors d’oeuvres
  • Supper remove – a meat dish, the entrants from the pickled / fermented food contest, and additional sides
  • Dessert remove – the entrants from the dessert contest, and additional dessert items.

All of this is subject to change at the wish and whim of the Feast Steward and is just here as a placeholder and general idea.

Food For the Journey!

Pickled or Fermented Food Contest

Bring a batch of your favorite pickled or feremented foods to the Stromgard Founding Revel. From Krauts to Cucumbers to Cactus, all are welcome!
There is no requirement that this be a period dish, but there will be a special prize for the best period dish (with documentation). Two big points both addressed below, but I want to just state here as well:
  • PLEASE bring a list of ingredients for your pickled or fermented foods so people can be aware of what is in it for food allergy purposes.
  • All fermented items should be FOOD, not beverages, as this is a Dry location, and we don’t even want to temp that.
Here are the Guidelines for the contest:
  1. Bring a Pickled or Fermented food item (this should be an actual food item, not condement, so none of that fermented fish sauce the Romans love, Sorry Livia).
  2. Your entry should consist of enough for around 15 people, as it will be offered to the populace with the supper remove after judging.
  3. Judging will be done by a panel of 3-5 judges to be selected prior to the event, but not entered into the event.
  4. Pickled or Fermented food does NOT have to be period, but as always, extra points for period dishes (with documentation all the better), and/or interesting dishes.
  5. PLEASE provide a list of ingredients in the dish in case of food allergies.

Here are the areas that we will be judging:

  1. Flavor
  2. Uniqueness
  3. Period documentation (if period dish)
  4. Visual presentation
  5. Populace Approval (give populace a chance to vote, kind of like for Delightful Duo Largesse?)
And here are the prizes:
  • The overall prize will be a 20 oz Fermenting Crock from Reannag Teine Pottery. This will go to the overall winner in the Combined judging and populace vote.
  • There will be a prize (tbd) for the best A&S Entry – this would be for the best period entry with documentation on when and where the dish originated, using period ingredients, etc…
  • BOTH prizes can be won by a period entry, only the overall prize can be won by non-period entries, but ALL are welcome. We are excited to see what interesting, amazing, and delicious pickled and fermented FOOD items you come up with.
NOTE: This is a dry site, so we emphasize fermented FOOD items, not adult beverages. I am happy to test and judge those for you OUTSIDEof the event, but for this event, please keep any fermented products to the relatively non-alcoholic and food-based items.

A Sweet Sensation

Dessert Contest
Please make a dessert large enough (or enough of a dessert) for about 15 people to share. Bring it to the event, to be dropped off downstairs. There will be a populace vote during the dessert remove of the feast to determine a populace winner. There will ALSO be a winner for best historical recipe with documentation (sort of an A&S contest portion).
Prizes: For the populace favorite, the prize will be a cutting board/platter. For the A&S Recipt winner, the prize will be a wooden collapsible cake stand.
Specific judging standards for the A&S Recipe still being determined, but assume it will require some kind of documentation of when and where the recipe comes from, the ingredients used, and if you were required or chose to replace any of those ingredients with more modern equivalents and why.
For ALL Desserts, please bring a card with a list of ingredients on it (preferably printed) that can be placed with the desserts in case of food allergies or intolerances.

Become The Great Stromgardian Skald

Norse Poetry Contest
Submit a poem in the Norse style proclaiming the glory of our Barony of Stromgard -OR- one (or more) of your favorite Stromgardians.
The poem should consist of at least three (3) stanzas of four (4) lines each.
They should be in any form of the Skaldic style, using a fixed metre, using alliterations, and using kennings.
If some to all of that is Norse to you, feel free to attend Duchess Miranda’s Norse Poetry class at the Founding Revel to learn more there.
There will be time after her class to work on a poem and submit it.
Entries must be submitted by an hour before closing court (time still in flux). Entries will be judged by Duchess Miranda, and the winner will receive a knife made by Master Grendel of steel and a moose antler handle, with a pocket sheath with brass accents (hopefully), made by Gideon Finlay (that’s me!).
May your wit be sharp, may your words be wistful, wonderful and wise while proclaiming the wordfame of our wondrous Barony and its populace. And may the best skald win!

Classes Offered

Nordic Poetry

Have you ever wanted to speak the word fame of your house, your comrades, your liege?  Have you wanted to let honey drip from your tongue like the skalds of old?  Come to Duchess Miranda’s Norse Poetry class to learn all the secret skills and forbidden knowledge of the old Norse Skalds.  Learn about metre and rhyme, styles of Norse Poetry, kennings (and what a kenning is).  And, once you are done learning this bewitching craft, put it to use by entering the Norse Poetry contest to be held in conjunction with this class (the class is NOT required for entering the contest, and people attending the class are NOT required to enter the contest, but hey, why waste all this amazing learning?) This will be held on the stage upstairs, starting at Noon

Wrapped Wire Ring

Join me in making a wire finger ring in an early medieval style. Mimicking finds that are linked to the Romano-British as well as Vikings, this ring will be made from provided brass wire. Tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. You will need a ring mandrel, round nose pliers, optional chain or flat nose pliers, and wire cutters. This craft involves tight pinching and twisting of the wrist. This will be held in the back of the upstairs room, starting at Noon.
Taught by HL Elizabeth Blackburn

Rapier 101

Curious about the spectacle of those vibrantly dressed people trying to stab each other? Want to add some finesse and trickery to your heavy game? Just think swords are cool and want to play? Join us for a rapier 101 class at Stromgard founding revel! The class will cover the basics of rapier fighting and will be taught by Catedratico Gregorio Cristovalez de La Vega.

The class is open to everyone, regardless of level of skill or athleticism (yes we mean you). Gear will be provided, the only thing you need to bring is your lovely self. Class will start at 3:00 PM outside at the lists location.
