TOURNEY FORMATS
Rapier (As posted by the current Rapier Champion, Lord Argan of Lionsdale)
Two 40-minute bearpits with a 10-minute break in between. The top 4 fighters will advance to a single elimination semi-final, which will be followed by a best of 3 final.
Weapon choice will be up to the fighter, no case allowed, and only one significant difference will separate this championship from the last. Rather than using the traditional bearpit ranking system, which rewards most fights, the final four will be selected based on win percentage. A minimum number of fights will be necessary to allow one to be considered (probably 10, but we’ll see after the first bearpit), at which time the four fighters with the best win percentage will advance. Not sure what win percentage is? Basically, you take the number of wins and divide by the number of losses. So, if you win 5 and lose 5, your percentage is 50, or .500. As a result, quality of fights will be more important than quantity.
Archery (As posted by the current Archery Champion, Lord Brynach ap Rhys)
In honour of the Avacal Tournament of Tournaments for Games, the theme of the shoot will be….games. Some of these games are period. Some of these games are certainly not period, but might have a period twist. Prepare to have fun.
This will be a traditional target archery competition with six targets.
Heavy Combat (As posted by the current Heavy Champion, HL Vladimir Andreivich Aleksandrov)
There will be no weapon or style restrictions this year, aside from those traditionally found at Crown Tourney (i.e. maximum of 5 striking surfaces, etc.). The format of the tourney will depend on the number of entrants.
This year the Heavy Champion’s tourney will also feature a prize table. Therefore all entrants will be required to provide a prize for the table, and of course all entrants will be choosing a prize to take home/bestow on their inspiration/eat. Prizes should ideally be handmade and/or SCA/medieval in nature. A reasonable value for the prize would be in the $20.00 range, but of course your personal budget may vary as needed.
Arts and Sciences (vacant)
Competition closed – please keep these requirements in mind for next year.
Requirements for entry are simple:
– two items, of different types (e.g., one piece of embroidered work and a calligraphed page, or a sample of a brewed liquor and a chain mail piece);
– neither item can ever have been entered in an A&S competition before and both must have been made within the past year;
– each item must be “in period,” or a reasonable facsimile of a period item;
– each item must have full documentation, including cites and sources;
– submitter must be prepared to defend his or her entries;
– all entrants must be prepared to abide by the requirements as outlined on the Cold Keep website, under Champions, including organizing the A&S Champion’s competition next year.
Entries will be judges on quality of work, appropriateness to period, and thoroughness of documentation.
