Acorn War XV Shire of Mountain Edge

Sept. 5-7, 2003 Sheridan, OR

The Shires of Mountain Edge, Dragon’s Mist, Coeur du Val, and Dun an Chalaidh invite you to join us for a weekend of war scenarios, Arts & Sciences activities and classes, Scottish Rules Croquet, Siege Engine Mania, Equestrian events, Never-Won-a-Tourney Tourney, Merchants, and more. Site Opens Friday at noon, closes Sunday at 6 pm. Primitive site. Water from a hose ½ mile away. Best to bring your own water. Above ground fires only, weather permitting. River on site. Guard your children.

Site Fee: 5 and under=free, 6 to 12=$5, 13 to 17= $9, 18 and over=$10. Per Kingdom Law there is a $3 non-member fee for adults. Make checks payable to SCA, Inc. Mt. Edge.

Directions: > The “Easiest But Not Shortest“:

Take I-5 to Exit 253–Salem/Hwy 22. Turn WEST on Hwy 22 and
follow the Hwy 22W/Ocean Beaches signs through Salem, over the Willamette
River and thence 11 miles west to the stoplight at the
Monmouth/McMinnville/99W intersection.
 Turn RIGHT on 99W. Travel 18 miles north. 99W intersects Hwy 18 at the
first stoplight in McMinnville.
 Turn LEFT onto Highway 18; (toward Sheridan/Oregon Coast). Travel west 16
miles on Hwy18 and its bypass (NOT the business route) to Steel Bridge
Road, near the end of a passing lane. Cross roads preceding the turn are
Red Prairie (four miles) and Harmony (two miles).
 Turn RIGHT onto Steel Bridge Road. Travel one mile to a sharp right-hand
curve (where the road ends). Turn LEFT onto the dirt road opposite the
curve. Travel south into the field (NOT the homeowner’s driveway) about a
mile to gate. Do NOT use the airstrip.

DIRECTIONS TO ACORN WAR

THESE ARE NEW directions that do not take you through
Willamina or Sheridan, which in the past was confusing to some
travelers. They do require those of you traveling from the coast or using
the “southern shortcut” to make a left turn on a busy highway at the
start of a passing area where other drivers expect you to speed up. There
was an accident that totaled a car at that intersection last year. You may be
tired and cranky, but please be sane and careful, too.


FROM THE WATERY WESTERN BORDERS OF AN TIR

Take your best route to Highway 18 and travel inland> about 29 miles to Valley Junction (the meeting place of highways 22E and
18, not a visible town). Follow Highway 18 east toward McMinnville/Portland
(DO NOT take the Highway 18/Willamina business loop). About a half-mile
past the Salem/Highway 20 East exit will be Steel Bridge Road. Get
into the left lane at the beginning of the passing area so you’ll be
able to make the left turn.
Turn LEFT onto Steel Bridge Road.  Drive for almost one
mile. SLOW DOWN as you approach the sharp right-hand curve; the road
abruptly ends in concrete blocks.
Turn LEFT onto the dirt road directly opposite the
curve. Travel into the field (DO NOT enter the homeowner’s driveway).
Follow the dirt road about a mile to Acorn War. There is a dirt airstrip
parallelling the road. Lacking wings, don’t use it.

THE “easiest but not shortest” DIRECTIONS for everyone else:
Take I-5 to Salem. Take the Hwy 22 exit (Exit No. 253).
Travel WEST on Hwy 22 through Salem, following the Highway
22W/Ocean Beaches signs (you’ll “exit” to the right twice) through downtown and
over the Willamette River. Continue on Highway 22 westbound for about 10
minutes past the river. The highway is interrupted by a stoplight at the
Monmouth/McMinnville/99W intersection.
Turn RIGHT (north) on 99W. Travel 18 miles into McMinnville. 99W intersects 18 West at your first stoplight in McMinnville.
Turn LEFT (west) onto Highway 18; the sign will say
Sheridan/Oregon Coast. Check your mileage and continue
for 16 more miles on Highway18 West to Steel Bridge Road. (DO NOT take exit
34 into Sheridan; stay on Highway 18 Bypass). You will see Red
Prairie Road about four miles before you need to turn and Harmony Road about
two miles before Steel Bridge. Slow down and pay attention; you will dizzily regret it if you miss Steel Bridge Road.
Turn RIGHT (north) onto Steel Bridge Road, which will be near the end of a passing area (just after a “right lane ends”sign). Travel on Steel Bridge Road for almost one mile. SLOW DOWN as you approach the sharp right-hand curve; the road ends in concrete blocks.
Turn LEFT (south) onto the dirt road directly opposite the curve. Travel into the field (DO NOT enter the homeowner’s driveway).
Follow the dirt road about a mile to Acorn War.
There is a dirt airstrip parallelling the road. Lacking wings, don’t use it.

NORTHERN SHORTCUT
from Three Mountains and other northern lands:
From I-5 exit No. 278 (the Donald/Aurora exit) travel west for about seven miles (the road changes names three times in that distance–Ehlen, Yergen and then McKay road).  McKay intersects with Highway 219.
Turn RIGHT (toward Newberg) and follow 219 (also signed as River Road NE and NE St. Paul Highway) until it intersects with 99W in Newburg, about four miles. You will follow a 15 mph right curve to a stoplight, where you will make a LEFT turn (toward McMinnville).
From that left turn you’ll travel roughly six miles on Highway 99W to the Highway 18/Dayton bypass, signed “18/233/Dayton/Oregon Coast.”
Turn LEFT and follow 18 Bypass toward the coast around McMinnville.
It’s about 24 miles from that turn onto Highway 18 to Steel Bridge Road. (DO NOT take exit 34 into Sheridan on the business loop; that way lies madness. Stay on Highway 18). You will see Red Prairie Road about four miles before you need to turn and Harmony Road about two miles before you turn. Slow down and pay attention; you will
dizzily regret it if you miss Steel Bridge Road.

SOUTHERN SHORTCUT
From the Summits and other lands south and east of the War:
Please read these directions in advance. Near the end of the trip, you will turn north onto a cutoff road, east onto Highway 18 and then immediately north onto Steel Bridge Road. Sandwiched in about a mile, the turns are made where the rest of the traffic is speeding up. Be careful and pay attention to the turns; it’s a bugger to get turned around if you miss one. Take your best route to the intersection of Highways 22 and 99W east of Salem and north of Rickreall. (If you’re unfamiliar with the area, take the Hwy 22 exit (Exit No. 253) off I-5. Travel WEST on Hwy 22 through Salem, following the Highway 22W/Ocean Beaches signs (you’ll “exit” to the right twice) through downtown and over the Willamette River. Continue on Highway 22 westbound for about 10 minutes past the river. The highway is interrupted by a stoplight at the Monmouth/McMinnville/99W intersection.). Travel west on Highway 22 for 15 miles to Sawtell Road. Note that about mile 14, Sawtell Road takes off to the left (south). Ignore that one but watch for it so you can slow down. The turn is hiding behind a huge highway sign on a steep downgrade that says “Highway 18/Willamina exit ¼ mile.” Slow! You’re not going that far. Sawtell Road is immediately preceded with a smaller green sign that says “Highway 18/McMinnville/Portland.”
> Turn RIGHT (north) onto Sawtell Road. You will “tee” into Highway 18 about a mile further on. Turn RIGHT (east) onto Highway 18 and get into the left lane; in about 100 yards, turn LEFT onto Steel Bridge Road. Drive for almost one mile. SLOW DOWN as you approach the sharp right-hand curve; the road abruptly ends in concrete blocks.
Turn LEFT (south) onto the dirt road directly opposite the curve. Travel into the field (DO NOT enter the homeowner’s driveway). Follow the dirt road about a mile to Acorn War. There is a dirt airstrip parallelling the road. Lacking wings, don’t use it.

 We warned you but you missed it anyway:
IF YOU MISS STEEL BRIDGE ROAD:
If you miss the RIGHT turn onto Steel Bridge Road (coming from the north or the “easiest” route), you’ll need to make a huge full circle, largely at 20 mph. Turn RIGHT at your first opportunity, which will be the Highway 22 East/Willamena/Salem exit. At the four way intersection (oncoming traffic does not stop!) turn right, go under Highway 18, continue around the loop, and get back on Highway 18 (toward Portland/McMinnville)
moving quickly to the left lane so you aren’t forced onto Highway 22 eastbound. Watch for Steel Bridge Road on your left and take the turn.

If you miss the left onto Steel Bridge Road coming from the coast or the southern shortcut, go up to Harmony or Red Prairie roads, turn either right or left (whichever is safest) find a place to turn around, and go back. If you have a trailer you may prefer to make a loop: Go up the two miles to Harmony Road, turn LEFT (careful; there is NO turn lane), turn RIGHT on Mill Creek Road, drive about two miles, and then turn
RIGHT on Red Prairie back to Highway 18.

IF you miss the right turn onto Sawtell Road (southern shortcut) your best bet is to take the Willamina exit to the right immediately following, find someplace to turn around, and then follow the signs and the dizzying circle to Highway 18 eastbound. 

 

SCOTTISH RULES CROQUET

One of the few activities where it’s good to pre-plan. Scottish Rules Croquet is a game of Pageantry and Showmanship. It is played like regular croquet, but the player is supported as befits his or her noble station. (And all Scots are noble, right?) Which means; retinue, dancers, entertainers, bagpipes…as appropriate. So, it’s kind of a team game as well as a spectator sport.

Will your family, household, guild or war band support its croquet player in the style he or she so richly deserves? Surely it would not pass up the opportunity to proclaim its excellence on the honorable Field of Croquet?

Note: There are two prizes. Since by tradition the Queen always wins, one prize goes to the winner of the game. The other goes for Best Pageantry (generally by audience acclaim).
