Classes Offered

Class Schedule of Janeltis Natal Day Celebration

10:30 Woven Buttons

Instructor: Khanzara of Samarqand

Learn to make woven buttons to use for Ottoman or Persian coats. Please bring small embroidery scissors if you have them.

10:30 Beginning Embroidery Stitches for Finishing or Embellishing Seams

Instructor: Kaaren Håkonsdóttir

Learning beginning embroidery stitches and finishing to spiff up your garb. Instructor will furnish all necessary supplies.

2:00 The Twisted Cord

Instructor: Judith of An Tir

For this class we are going to return to the basics Easy. Fast. Universal. Suitable for almost every culture and time period.

3:00 Finger-looped Braiding

Instructor: Judith of An Tir

Those of us who make history-inspired garb, armor, weapons, and other artifacts often need cordage to complete our items. This class will cover one of the simpler finger-looped braids. Bring embroidery floss or any kind of yarn or crochet thread is you wish. We’ll have some with us as well. Scissors would be handy if you have them.

2:00 Rectangular Construction That Fits

Instructor: Malek of Samarqand

Box/rectangular construction works well for basic garb but often does not fit very well and can even restrict movement. This class takes the basic concept of rectangular construction – and with the addition of gussets and gores, plus some selective trimming – can make your garb projects fit so much better. This is a patterning concept class and is not going to follow any true historical patterns. There will be examples/samples of how the patterning concept can be applied to a variety of garments including shirts, tunics, coats, and caftans.

4:00 Hand Sewing for Complete Beginners

Instructor: Vivien NicUldoon

Perfect for newcomers. No supplies needed, instructor will provide what’s needed

4:00 Layered, Stitched/Embroidered Decorative Leather

Instructor: Malek of Samarqand

Though tooled leather looks really cool – layered and embroidered leather is also a historical method for making your leather accouterments look fabulous. Across the Middle East and Ottoman Empire layered and embroidered leather was used to make many leather goods look fantastic and intricate.

Types of leather: 6-8oz veg tan leather for the base material. Garment weight chrome-tanned/dyed for the decorative/layering bits.

Other materials: paper, pens/pencils for drawing out designs and scissors to cut them out of the decorative leather.

This method does not require a whole set of tools or dyes/paints to make your leather look good.

Students may bring their own leather or leather bits can be purchased. Price determined by the amount purchased.
