A one-day event in celebration of The Dowager Princess’ birthday (and a few others as well.) with a day of classes featuring textile arts such as embroidery with dance and food on the side. These are all things that Her Serene Highness appreciated.

Her Serene Highness was and continues to be an inspiration not only for me but for many others. Even those who never knew her, admire her contributions to An Tir and the SCA as a whole. While it is not my intention to place her on a pedestal or set her up to be worshiped (something Janeltis would have soundly rejected), I believe there is room and reason for the example she set to be celebrated and encouraged throughout the known world.

It is my sincere desire to introduce her legacy to new generations of people who can be inspired by and learn from her life.

Classes will be held throughout the day and are included in the site fee. Gate opens at 9AM.

Registration Information

If you would like to attend one of our many classes, please pre-register. Note that some classes may overlap. Most classes have a cap on number of attendees, and spots will be awarded based on who signed up for it first. Five minutes after the class starts, no-show spots will open up to drop-ins.

Class: Messenger Bag Construction 

Time: 10:30AM

Location: Men’s Lounge

Instructor: Mistress Gulenay

Class limit: 8

Class Description: Students will make a shoulder bag you’ll be comfortable using in SCA context (periodesque). You are encouraged to take Kaaren’s Embellishment Stitches class today so that you can decorate your shiny new bag. Handouts and kits will be provided by the instructor.

Class Description: Learn to make your own booties! Perfect for your Scythian needs. We will be creating a pattern based on your feet and then walk through the construction process. Students need to bring a sock they are willing to sacrifice for the pattern. All other materials provided by the instructor.

Class: A Brief History of Medieval Board, Cards, and Dice Games

Class Description: The history of games goes back to the ancient civilizations, but games really blossomed in the Middle Ages, and they’re some of the favorite activities we do in the Society! The purpose of this course is to provide a bit of history of some medieval games and an opportunity to play a small variety of them. This will show that “games evolve over time and space.” Leaving a legacy of multiple names and variations of rules. We will go over and play board games such as Hnefatafl, Morris, Draughts, Goose, and Gluckhaus. Medieval playing cards lacked a standardized number of cards or kind of suits which has resulted in a number of games being lost to history. But we can try our hand at Noddy. Dice are likely older than recorded history, as they have been found to have derived from bones (such as knuckle bones), before moving to a later period six sided die. One dice game was known as Hazard.

Class: Tablet Woven Brocade – History & Technique

Class Description: This class will briefly cover the history of table twoven brocade and the areas/times it was prevalent. Pattern drafting and reading shall be discussed, and the class handout will include some sample patterns developed by the instructor. Brocade tablet woven technique will be demonstrated with class participants able to try on the instructor’s looms or their own (if brought). Helpful books and resources will be linked in the course materials so participants can explore additional resources on their own time.

Knowledge Requirement: Understanding of tablet weaving technique (advanced beginner to intermediate). This course will not cover fundamentals such as warping, and common terms/concepts, such as warp, weft, turning direction, S/Z threading should be generally understood by the participant.  

Recommended Materials: The instructor will demonstrate on her loom.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own loom (or backstrap setup) with a single color 14 card warp (all holes threaded) with alternating S/Z threading.  Participants should also bring a brocade weft thread 2x as large as the warp thread they used (the instructor will provide options if the participant isn’t sure what to select).

Class: Beginning Assisi Stitch

Class Description: Assisi is an early type of counted voided work where only the background is stitched to reveal the pattern. Students will learn the four stitches used in Assisi and stitch their own sample.

Students are asked to bring sewing snips. Everything else will be supplied. 

Class: Nalbinding 

Time: 12:30PM

Location: Main Hall Classroom 2

Instructor: HL BeakBell

Class limit: 6

Class Description: Learn to Nalbind the Oslo Stitch! Come to have fun and learn something new or refresh your skills!  This is to be a class strictly to learn and practice the stitch.  Muscle memory is a thing!  Bring your own skein of wool (yes must be wool) preferably of medium to chucky weight yarn and a nalbinding needle if you have one.  I will provide you with your own nalbinding if you do not already have one.

Class: Polpette di Carne de Vitello (Pork Roulade)

Class limit: 5

Class Description: Students will make a delicious and beautiful roulade. Ingredients provided. We’ll be making enough for the evening meal. It is relatively easy and doesn’t require previous culinary experience, but it is pleasing to the eye and tastebuds.

Class: Beginning Embroidery

Instructor: Duchess Kaaren Håkonsdóttir

Class limit: 12

Class Description: Students will learn and practice several stitches to strengthen and embellish seams and applique. Everyone is welcome, and participants in Gulenay’s messenger bag class today are encouraged to consider this “Bags! Part Deux” (bonus points if you recognize the pop culture reference), and decorate your shiny new bags. Handouts and kits will be provided by the instructor.

Class: Medieval Prayer Beads: Paternosters & Rosaries

Time: 2PM

Class Description: This class will cover an overview of medieval paternosters and rosaries. We will look at examples from art and extant finds. Then, we will spend time making a paternoster or rosary. A suggested supply list will be posted before the class. 

Class: Tlaxcalli -Tortillas- & Arepas 

Time: 2PM

Location: Kitchen Classroom 2

Instructor: Baroness Dagmar

Class limit: 5 

Class Description: Learn how to make tortillas de harina y de maiz as well as traditional arepas. Ingredients will be provided, please bring your own fillings for arepas or take them all home to enjoy later. 

Class: Renaissance Dance 

Time: 2PM

Location: Upstairs

Instructor: Baroness Kateline MacFarlane

Class limit: 12 (depending on space available- maybe 24)

Class Description: Come and learn the basic dance styles of the Renaissance.Please wear comfortable, supportive footwear.  Leather soles are best.  If your clothing has a train or extreme sleeves, please be prepared to restrain them so as not to impede the dancing.  All ages and abilities are welcome.

Class: Norse Wire Weaving 

Time: 3:30PM

Location: Main Hall Classroom 2

Instructor: Dame Muireann 

Class limit: 8 

Class Description: We will be using craft wire to make a metal chain which resembles metal jewelry made in the Scandinavian countries during the Early Medieval Period. Will also take a short look at variations that are more modern. Instructor will provide the supplies and tools needed for the class as well as a handout.

Class: Savory Pierogi 

Time: 3:30PM

Location: Kitchen Classroom 1

Instructor: Baroness Erika

Class limit: 10

Class Description: Students will learn how to make Polish style Pierogi. Students will be working with boiling water and flour, so they may want to bring an apron or shirt that they don’t mind getting dirty.

Class: Make a Scythian Hat 

Time: 3:30PM

Class limit: 5

Class Description: Students should bring a pair of scissors, all other supplies provided.  Prerequisite: knowing which end the thread goes through in a sewing needle.
