Come one, come all to Seagirt’s Gentle Arts and Fall Fair!
Enter to be the Arts and Sciences Champion of Seagirt, show off your fun or fantastic garden produce or crafts at the Fall Fair, play some games, and celebrate the harvest!
** Bullying & Harassment **
The SCA prohibits harassment and bullying of all individuals and groups.
Harassment and bullying includes, but is not limited to the following:
* offensive or lewd verbal comments directed to an individual;
* the display of explicit images (drawn or photographic) depicting an individual in an inappropriate manner;
* photographing or recording individuals inappropriately to abuse or harass the individual;
* inappropriate physical contact; unwelcome sexual attention; or retaliation for reporting harassment and/or bullying.
Participants violating these rules are subject to appropriate sanctions. If an individual feels subjected to harassment, bullying or retaliation, they should contact a Seneschal, President of the SCA, or the Kingdom’s Board Ombudsman. If a participant of the SCA becomes aware that someone is being harassed or bullied, they have a responsibility pursuant to the SCA Code of Conduct to come forward and report this behavior to a Seneschal, President of the SCA or Kingdom’s Board Ombudsman.

No matter what safety precautions we put in place, there is no substitute for each individual being educated about the risk to themselves and their loved ones and making responsible choices to protect themselves and others from this virus.

Gentle Arts 2022 Arts & Sciences Championship
Entrants for the post of **A&S Champion of Seagirt** will strive through three tests. Individual entries for each test are welcome, but Championship entries will be given priority in adjudication. Beginners and experienced entrants alike are encouraged to compete.
**1) A test of Excellence**
Entrants will present one item or research paper live during the event to the A&S community.
Please email your documentation to seagirt.artsnsci@tirrigh.org before Labour Day for review. (But feel free to do so early for feedback on a draft!)
Entrants are encouraged to bring their item as well as some supporting presentation, including but not limited to pictures, tools, earlier experiments, texts consulted, etc. to round out their presentation in an interactive way.
Entrants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Seagirt Judging Forms.
**2) A test of Leadership**
Entrants will demonstrate or teach a skill to the A&S community for approximately 10 minutes. Please consider practicing with friends or coming to Seagirt Virtual A&S for some coaching. Judges will rate teaching skills on a 5-point scale. It is not necessary to provide supplies for the A&S community as in a more traditional class.
**3) A test of Creativity**
Entrants will create a small item on site with a surprise theme that will be given to you at Gate when you check into site. Judges will rate creativity on a 5-point scale.

Other Challenges
** Illumination Challenge **
Try something new and let’s learn from one another! Use an illumination technique that you’ve never tried before to create a new effect in your illumination. It can be something you learned about or a new thing you thought up. Write a short paragraph describing the technique and its desired outcome, and display both the illumination and the paragraph. The entered piece can be either finished or unfinished, but it should be intended to be a complete scroll.
**Rapier Tournament**
Hosted by Seamus MacDonald of Skye: Format to be decided on the day based on number of participants. Please come out and join the tournament, the victor on this day will receive a silk banner from Baroness Aniko.
**Armoured Fighting Tournament**
Come fight for the favour of our glorious Baroness Aniko. Heavy combat at Seagirt’s Gentle Arts will consist of a round robin of death, with the victor taking home the admiration of Her Excellency and a small token to represent her great esteem.

Title: Uncial
Instructor SCA Name: HE Taliesin ap Hafgan
Class Length: 2 hours
Min/Max Students:6-10
Suitable for youth (9 – 11), teens (12 – 14) through adults. Youth and teens need to be accompanied by an adult and comfortable writing or printing a basic alphabet. Not recommended for youth under 9 years of age.
Class Description: Uncials, introduced in the 3rd Century is a majuscule alphabet (upper case only), historically used by monks for the writing of religious books and manuscripts. Uncial’s broad single stroke letters use simple round forms, taking advantage of the newly available parchment and vellum surfaces, as opposed to the angular, multiple stroke letters more suited to the rougher surfaces (papyrus) previously available.
Students will be introduced to the basic Uncial alphabet and how to form each of the letters of the alphabet.
Supplies Needed: Supplies, tools etc. will be supplied by instructor. For this class the instructor will provide chisel nib felt pens for use in the class. Students are welcome to bring their own pens, ink and paper if they prefer to use a regular nib. A C-2 Speedball nib or its equivalent is recommended.
Kit or class fee: $5.00 Costs includes all materials, tools and exemplars.
Title: Norse Runes

Class Length: 2 hours

Suitable for youth (9 – 11), teens (12 – 14) through adults. Youth and teens need to be accompanied by an adult and comfortable writing or printing a basic alphabet. Not recommended for youth under 9 years of age.
Class Description: The art of writing in Viking runes (also known as the Elder Futhark)., the sacred alphabet of the Germanic peoples of Northern Europe. The class will offer basic instruction on the history of runes, their meaning and the writing of the characters. Students will introduced to both monoline and regular letter forms.
Runes are steeped in history & spirituality and were commonly used for divination. Some consider runes to be an ancient oracle particularly when considered in the history, stories and myths of the Vikings and Norse. The very name ‘rune’ derives from the ancient Gothic ‘runa’ meaning a secret or a mystery (Runes, Dee, J 001)
Supplies Needed: Supplies, tools etc. will be supplied by instructor. For this class the instructor will provide chisel nib felt pens for use in the class. Title: Natural Cordage Making
Instructor: Duchess Meagan ferch Meredydd
Class Length: 2hrs
Class Description: Learn to hand make reverse-twist, plied cordage from natural plant materials that have been dried and rehydrated.
Supplies Needed: Some materials will be provided, and students are invited to supplement with their own supply of materials, such as dried leaves of Daylily, Crocosmia, Iris, Daffodil, Plantain, etc. , and/or dried dandelion stems.

Title: Introduction to Fingerloop Braiding
Instructor SCA Name: Alicia le Wilfulle
Class Length: 2 hours
Min/Max Students: min 1; max 6
Class Description: Fingerloop braids have many uses both now and historically. They can be used as drawstrings, lacing cords, shirt ties, seal tags, and couched down as trim. Students will learn to make the very useful “round lace of 5 loops” and some of its variations. Students will take home a handout with instructions and a sample braid. Some manual dexterity is required.

Title: Intermediate Fingerloop Braiding
Instructor SCA Name: Alicia le Wilfulle
Class Length: 2 hours
Min/Max Students: min 1; max 6
Class Description: Are you familiar with making the standard five loop braid and it’s variations and wanting to learn some other fingerloop braids? This hands-on class will introduce you to the lace bend and grene dorge as well as variations on both of these. Other braids may be added if time permits. Students will take home a handout with instructions and sample braids. Some manual dexterity is required.

Title: Intro to Basic embroidery
Instructor SCA Name: Fionnguala inghean ui Murchaidh
Class Length: 2hrs
Class Description: If you’re brand new to embroidery, this class is a great place to start. It covers tools, a number of essential stitches, and has you creating your own decorated needle book.
Supplies Needed: all supplies provided
Kit or class fee: $7 includes all supplies and you get to take home your embroidery hoop at the end of the class
Title: Faux Stained Glass
Instructor SCA Name: Fionnguala inghean ui Murchaidh
Class Length: 2hrs
Class Description: Stained glass adds something magical to medieval ambiance but the real stuff is difficult to take camping and tends to be delicate. This class will get you started with the basics of creating your own vinyl stained glass piece to embellish your encampment or an event with as you see fit.
Supplies Needed: all supplies provided
Kit or Class fee: $10 includes all supplies. You get to take home your piece as well as a bottle of black “leading” for further experimentation.
Title: Smashing Rocks
Instructor SCA Name: THL Merewen de Sweynesheie
Class Length: 2 hours
Class Description: In this class we will be taking the Gentle Arts in a violent direction. Some of the earliest known markings by humankind were made from earth pigments. Join us in sifting dirt, smashing rocks, and just generally making mud as we explore hands-on what the earth has to offer the world of painting and colour.
Max 8 participants. 2 hours.
Supplies Needed: Bring a few small lidded containers into which to put your new pigments.

Title: I Have Pigments, Now What?
Instructor SCA Name: THL Merewen de Sweynesheie
Class Length: 45 minutes
Class Description: I Have Pigments, Now What?
In this short class I will discuss and demonstrate what to do to turn pigments (either handmade or store-bought) into useable paint. Discussion will include various historical binders. Although I will be making watercolour, there will be some discussion of other media such as tempera and oil paint.

Instructor SCA Name: Maestro Guidobaldo Marco Odo Romeo d’Aquila
Class Length: Bolognese Sidesword Focussed study and practice of techniques from 16th century fencing manuals, including stance, movement, guard, and strikes. Will also include drills to help with good combat form, and partner exercises for better blade on blade interaction. Techniques learned will be applicable to SCA Cut & Thrust and SCA Rapier combat. Class Description:
Supplies Needed: Full C&T armour and equipment would be an asset but not a requirement to participate in the training.
Kit or class fee: None.
Title: German Longsword
