Meal Information

We will be serving a light repast of sandwiches and German Potato salad.  Please note:  The Feast Sub-autocrat will be excluding major allergens – soy, egg, gluten, nightshades – in our recipes and will post an ingredients list before and at the event.

In anticipation of the delights on display at the “Splendor of Dragon’s Mist” competitions, the Barony will be providing a meat and vegetarian main dish, and asks the that populace accent the meal with a bountiful harvest of sides and desserts.  No rules or restrictions on who brings what – you are limited only by your imagination, your skill, and your generous spirit.   Break out your grandmother’s favorite bread recipe!  Serve up your favorite side dish!  And if you are particularly proud of your dish, consider making a smaller, tasting version to submit in the “Splendor of Dragon’s Mist” culinary competition!

Tournament Information

“Fight The Dark” Multi-Discipline Team Tourney to Support the Veterans 

The Barony of Dragon’s Mist is hosting a Multi-Discipline Team Tourney to support the Veterans Suicide Awareness Project.  Squads of four (one heavy, one rapier, one archer, and one thrown weapon) will register at Lists with their team name and members.  We are asking for a $5 donation for each participant to enter.  Each team’s mission will be to gain points through marshal prowess.  Support each other and help each other attain excellence because you are literally fighting against Veterans Suicide.  As you rack up wins, each team will report to Lists with the points they have achieved – Archery points will be scored per the Tavern Games competition outlined below; Heavies and Rapier will receive 5 points for each win; Thrown Weapons will score points according to their competition.  The team with the most points will win a special group prize at Closing Court, as well as the glory of having beaten back the forces of darkness and despair.

Members of the populace are welcome to indicate their personal favorite fighter or team by donating any amount in their name at Lists.  The team that receives the most popular acclaim in this fashion will be named People’s Choice, and will also receive a group prize at Closing Court.

Archery

Youth and Family Activities

Youth – The current Champions, Moira inghean Eoghain (Senior division) and Qing Fong (Junior division), have agreed to the format, which has been approved by Their Excellencies. Competitors will be given a booklet of activities. Upon completion of each activity, the competitor will receive a stamp in their booklet. The competitor in each division with the most stamps will become the Barony’s next Youth Champions (the tie breaker will be explained below). Each activity is completely voluntary and none are required. However, since the competition is for the most stamps, more activities are encouraged.

Here is the list of activities and their descriptions:

• Letter of Intent: this can be done before the event and presented to Their Excellencies at opening court. Also, the text of the Letter should be emailed to Baroness Ana at dragonsmist.baroness@antir.org
• Create a new and unique device: this can be done before the event and with adult assistance, preferably, using the device registration form available on the AnTir Heraldry website. Blazonry is not required, but highly encouraged. (If the child already has a registered device, the entry must be different)
• Dragon in Any Medium: this is a long standing tradition for Dragon’s Mist. Using any type of materials, create a piece of “art” that represents, in some way, a Dragon. This can be done before the event and should only include adult assistance where safety is a concern. The Dragon in Any Medium will be the only judged activity and will be scored by populace using stones (per tradition). That scoring will be used as a tie breaker in the event that it is needed.
• Scribal Painting: paint a piece of marginalia that will be provided on site.
• Play Games: at least one of a variety of games, which may include Senet, the Royal Game of Ur, Hnefetafl, Chess, Checkers, and/or others.
• Perform a bardic piece: this can be any type of entertainment; song, poem, story, etc.
• Give 30 minutes of service at Gate
• Give 30 minutes of service with the Water Bearers
• Town Cry: perform at least one announcement during a Town Cry
• Throw Axes at the Thrown Weapons range: at least two throws, if equipment is available
• Throw Knives at the Thrown Weapons range: at least two throws, if equipment is available
• Throw Darts at the Thrown Weapons range: at least two throws, if equipment is available
• Shoot at the Archery range: at least two rounds of three arrows, if equipment is available

Youth of Dragon’s Mist, this is your chance to show the Barony what you can do!

Reminder to adults, per SCA rules, the responsible adult (parent, legal guardian, adult with appropriate paperwork) must be within sight and sound of the youth at all times. Especially with the safety requirements on the Thrown Weapons and Archery ranges, it would be best if you could accompany your youth as they compete for this, the Barony’s most important Championship

You’ve had That Week. There’s an event this weekend, and you wanted to up your medieval game with a nice lunch. But there’s been no time to cook. Fear not. In this class we’ll learn 3 different sauces that you can serve with chicken or other ready to serve foods.

We’ll work in pairs to make up 3 different sauces common to many times and places in the Known World. We’ll practice cutting up chickens and creating a nice presentation for any lunch or potluck.

No stoves, no pots and pans, and no cooking. We’ll be using some modern shortcut products available at most grocery stores. I’ll provide all recipes, a shopping list and a list of suggested equipment. Bring an apron and a dishtowel.

Students attending the class will learn to make a basic blank journal of four signatures, long stitched, wrapped in a leather cover, and tied with a leather cord. At the end of the class students will take their new book with them. Students will be provided with the following: Leather cover, Leather cord, Sewing thread, and paper.
Students should bring a sharp awl or leather punch, a sharp knife, a heavy duty pair of sharp scissors (to cut leather), and a #18 sewing needle (NOT the kind for your sewing machine).

  Learn to make the famous pork pie as well as get to keep the recipe. The pies will be served for lunch.

Learn the fun and creative art of needle felting!  Students will make a game board on which to play Nine Men’s Morris, which they are welcome to take home and play for their enjoyment.  Supplies including game pieces, and a handout with game rules and instructions will be provided by the instructor.  This is going to be an extremely fun class!

• Embroidery 101

Embroidery 101: Straight Stitches. In addition to a general introduction — discussion of fabrics, threads, and various supplies, including how to mark designs on fabric — we will be learning six basic stitches: running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, herringbone stitch, satin stitch, and split stitch. I will be providing a selection of threads, a small hoop, a piece of marked muslin, a needle, and a class handout, including diagrams of the stitches. All that the students need to bring is a pair of snips for cutting the thread and perhaps writing materials, if they wish to make notes.

What you will learn:  how to make your own set of veil pins

Materials that will be present: Beads, pin base, stoppers or super glue, foam to put the pins for transport, and a small plastic bag to seal them in. What you need to bring:  creativity and imagination; maybe decide on colors interested in. Each person will leave with their own set of veil pins that they made.

Cost:  $6 per set of veil pins made

Students: Max 10. Ages 10 and up. Kids will need supervision by a parent or another to assist them.

Learn basic knitting techniques as you make a beautiful and useful washcloth!  Students will receive all the materials you will need to make a complete washcloth – yarn, needles, the works!  Here is your chance to learn a fun new craft that you can use in the SCA and in the mundane world – just in time for the holidays!

Find your inner bard! Discover different types of bardic arts including poetry, singing, storytelling, and more! Mea has 30 years experience as a bard and will be able to help you take your passion and find a period style to express it. For those who already have a peice and would like help developing it please feel free to bring it with you Mea will be happy to go over it as time permits.

• Armor Patterning & Fitting

Learn how to use anatomical markers and where the human body actually bends to help your armour fit and move better without pinching or binding.  Test that cool new armour design without investing hours and money into real armour that does not fit!  Also – tips on making a duct-tape armouring dummy. Materials: Poster Board, cardboard, tape, marking pens and measuring tape.

• Ottoman Musical Modes & Jam Session

Learn historic Ottoman musical modes and rhythms and jam in them.

Ability to read music not required.  Bring your own percussion instrument or melody instrument that can play a chromatic scale, or I’ll have several pairs of loaner finger cymbals available.

Have you ever been inspired by an object, place or time? Where do you go from there? This class will provide you with some insight and tools to help you research to find the answers you need.

• Mosaic Tile Plaque

Using our knowledge of historical practices – and modern tools – we will create a small mosaic plaque. The goal of this class is to introduce the art while offering an opportunity to make something beautiful to take home. This is a hands-on class, and can be messy. Plan accordingly.  Some tools and materials will be on hand. However, if you have specific colors of smalti you want, feel free to bring it. Also, extra nippers and hammers are always appreciated.  You will need to bring a 6″x6″ pattern on a grid that you are interested in making.
