Competition:
We have three competitors this year for A&S champion! They will
be presenting during the day on April 29th, presenting schedule
will be posted soon!

Daffodil Tournament:
Novelty shoots and tourney details will be announced soon!

There will be a thrown weapons range along with the archery range
at this event. Youth will be able to shoot as well with legal
guardian present.

Instructor: Lady Kira Mikkeldottir
Number of students: open to all blue-card members
Description: Gate can be hectic and confusing, but it is one of the
most important tasks someone can do during an event! Learn the
proper way to run gate from the Blatha An Oir Exchequer. For legal
reasons, to run gate you must be over the age of 18 and a blue-card
member of the SCA, as you are handling
money.  

Gaming indoors is open to all in the evening.

Gold Key will be available when gate opens. Sign in sheets for
classes will be available directly AFTER COURT at about 9:30am.

Champion hopefuls for A&S and Bardic should attend to declare
their intention to compete that day to the Baron and Baroness of
Blatha An Oir.

A&S champion competitors should stay and chat with Dame
Cristiana for a few moments after court is recessed.

Sign in sheets for classes will be available immediately after
court ends. 

***Many classes are open to a large number of participants;
others are only open to a small amount due to instructors having
limited hand-outs, materials, etc. If you have questions about
those limits, such as “can I just sit in and observe?” please ask
the instructor or the event steward before-hand.

10AM – CLASSES AND RANGES

Youth area:
Youth chain mail keychain workshop
Instructor: Kurohayashi Yoshi
Number of students: 3 youth/teens. Accompanying adults aren’t
included in count.
Description: Youth class for ages 10 to 17. Learn the mysteries of
4 in 1 chain mail weave with Yoshi, one of our Baronial Pages. This
simple technique is perfect for beginners and can be used for a
variety of things. Students should be mature enough to follow
instructions, use pliers and do detail work. Class fee is $5 per
student and will include handouts, keychain findings, and a choice
of colored aluminum rings. Students should bring chairs. (anyone
below the age of 12 should have an adult present to assist)

but feel free to bring a chair and work on a project/socialize
too!

Description of Class: An overview of Greek theatre in Athens during
the 5th Century BCE

Iconic Costuming: Making a men’s
warrior/caftan coat
Instructor: Baroness Maricka Sigrunsdotter
Number of Students: Open class. Instructor will have 8 hand-outs on
hand which can be downloaded online at a later date.
Description: A discussion group about the Warrior Caftan Coat from
the late Iron-age (Vendal era), and how to make one. Students are
encouraged to bring pen/paper and a chair.

Outdoor Area C: Fighting/Marshallate focus area

Introduction to SCA Warfare

Number of students: up to 12
Description: For fighters and non-fighters who want to be able to
have better understanding of what’s happening on the battlefield.
This class covers scenarios, weapons, tactics, commands with
handouts and anecdotes. Students should bring chairs.

Introduction to Documentation

Number of Students: Up to 50
Description: Curious or frustrated by documentation requirements?
Documentation can be fun. Let me share my joy for research and
writing it out with you. We’ll deconstruct what makes good
documentation for up to Kingdom-level competitions. Walk away with
best practices, an outline, and lots of insights about what judges
look for. This class is appropriate for all levels of competitors
interested in entering competitions that ask for documentation.
Students should bring chairs, a pen and paper for notes.

so keep that in mind if you wish to attend later classes)
Description:  Discussion of how to inspect archery equipment
on an SCA range, to include recurve, longbow, horsebow, crossbow,
and arrows.  This is a skill Jr. TAMs (Target Archery Marshal)
need to become Sr TAMs, but it’s good for everyone to know how to
inspect their own archery gear. This class is appropriate for
Teens. Especially those interested in becoming Youth Archery
Marshals in training. 

Focus Tips to Improve your Thrown Weapon score

Number of Students: Open Class
Description: It is hard to maintain focus during a scoring round.
Come learn some tips and activities that will help to improve your
focus and increase your scores. Bring your thrown weapons, feel
free to bring paper and pen for notes.

Elizabethan Embroidery: Detached Buttonhole
Stitch
Instructor: Dame Elizabeth FittzWilliam
Number of Students: 6
Description: Learn detached buttonhole stitch. This stitch is a
fill stitch that is not worked through the fabric, but rather on
top of it. You will learn two styles of this stitch. ***Students
need to bring a basic sewing kit (scissors, needles, etc.), as well
as a basic embroidery frame or hoop. No fee. Ability to do a basic
chain stitch is a plus.

Tablet Weaving: It’s not Magic, it’s
Mechanics!
Instructor: Dame Madrun y Gwehyddes
Number of students: Open Attendance (Handout available in PDF
form)

Description: Learn the variables between different styles of tablet
weaving. Students will learn the mechanics of creating medieval
bands.

Outdoor area B:
Techniques for etching brass
Instructor: HE, Sir Gernon Valletorte du Harfleur
Number of students: 10-15
Description of class: Metal decoration is common in the SCA and
medieval history.  It is found on armor, costumes, and
throughout household or campsite items.  This class will
demonstrate several ways to acid etch brass.  Different ways
to transfer designs onto brass, types of resists and acids will be
discussed. The class will focus on the “photo paper” technique to
transfer resists to the metal. ***$5.00 fee per student. Instructor
will bring brass, resists, acid, and other chemicals needed for
each participant.  Each student will leave with a medallion of
their own design. This class is adults only because of safety
considerations due to the acids involved.

Heavy Fighting Sword making 101
Instructor: HL Gabhin Mac Findleagh, Sergeant
Number of Students: 5-10 people
Description: A class on how from start to finish to make an SCA
legal longsword. We will be putting one together during the class.
No materials or cost needed. Bring Pen and paper to take notes if
desired.

Singing Skills
Instructor: Sir Leith Amhranai dal gCais
Maximum number of students: 50
Description of class: This class is for people who can carry a
tune, with or without a proverbial bucket, and would like
to sound better doing so. We will focus primarily on tools to
improve your tone quality and projection, along with some work on
phrasing, diction, performance skills, and other topics as
time permits. We will also address differences between period
and modern technique choices where relevant.

Create a Flemish Bowstring
Instructor: Lord Tomas MacDonnchaidh, of Wyewood
Number of Students: Minimum 2, Maximum 6
Description: Teach the student how to make a Flemish string for a
longbow or recurve bow.
***Cost: $10.00 per
bowstring  (the cost of commercially produced, un
served, strings ranges between $10 and $26, depending on material
used (B-50, B-55, Fast Flight, etc).
***Supplies the student needs to bring to class:
– the bow for which to make the string.
– A knife, or other cutting instrument, (sharp) for cutting the
string.
– A desire to know how to make a bowstring.
***Provided by the instructor: Flemish string jig. Bowstring
material, serving material, serving tool, string makers wax.
Handouts with pictures of the process
***Class outline
– Determine the length of the string by using either documentation
on the bow or measuring the bow.
– Determine the construction of the string (number of strands) by
documentation on the bow or alternate method.  
– Learn how the Flemish string jig is adjusted and used.
– Building the layers of strands.
– Making the first loop on the end of the string using back-weaving
technique.
– Making the second loop: Checking the twist.
– Stringing the bow, verify string length, checking brace height,
stretching the string
– Serve the string for shooting
– Test bow draw weight

Description: This Workshop will teach how to identify and name
examples of period calligraphy, then give a chance to practice
calligraphy using a felt tip calligraphy style pen. Any child
registered in the YAFA token program can earn a level one token if
they complete this class.

Posament
Instructor HL Disa i Birkilundi
Number of students: 10
Description: ***Cost $5. Posament is a textile embellishment
technique using a wire coiled around a silk cord found almost
exclusively in Birka, Sweden in the tenth century. We will discuss
history, resources and creation methods for both the coiled wire
(tentrad) and the posament itself. Students should bring Pen and
Paper and a chair.

Pattern Book, you will learn Alcega’s measuring system, how to
scale his diagrams to make a pattern that fits your measurements,

The Music of the Trouvères
Instructor: Lady Annik de Venoix
Number of students: Up to 20
Description: Have you ever heard of troubadours? During the
11^th to 14^th centuries they were
the leading musicians in the southern region of what is now France.
The trouvères were their northern French counterpart. Learn
about the poet-composers of medieval France : who they were, what
they wrote, and how to perform it. No prior knowledge or
performance skills are required. This class is appropriate whether
you want to perform their music or simply learn more.

Medieval Falconry
Instructor:  Lady Dagrun (Runa) Harasdottir
Number of students: Open to all
Description: Falconry was an extremely popular pastime in period,
both throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  Lords and
ladies, the clergy, and yes, even the common man took up the sport
on some level.  Learn how it was done, from trapping or
rearing eyasses (baby raptors), to training, to the hunt. 
Learn terminology that hasn’t changed in 1000 years. 
Understand what the sport was and why it lost its popularity and
learn about modern practice.  This class will help enrich your
persona and understanding of period life.  Questions
welcome.  Hands on examples of equipment (called
furniture).  There will be at least one small falcon
present.

Description: The emphasis is on English and northern European
gardens, although there will be some application to those in
Mediterranean climates. This will examine the purposes, layouts,
structures, and plants of the potager, herber, and orchard.
Handouts will be provided. There may be some walking to show local
and naturalized specimens on site. Students are encouraged to bring
a chair, pen, and paper for notes.

persona? This is a continuation of Persona 101, great class for
people trying to fill out their persona’s history and back story,

Description: Are you cuious about what it takes to be a knight in
the SCA? Perhaps you just have a question about chivalric behaviors
on or off the list field? Then come join us for an open discussion
with members of the Order of the Chivalry. This free-form question
and answer roundtable will focus on the pursuit of Knighthood and
questions of Chivalry and the Knightly virtues. Attendees should
bring a chair.

Coordinator?

Description: An insight into the complex world of Kingdom court
coordinating  and how to tailor it down to a Baronial 
level as well. Do you love service? Come learn about the duties of
those who serve our crown and coronets in the SCA. Many hands are
needed to help everything run smoothly during court and when their
Majesties and Excellencies travel. Come learn about how you can
help support the pomp and circumstance of our game!

Beginning Calligraphy

Number of students you feel comfortable to teach at one time: 
up to 10-14. Students of any age who are willing to listen and
learn are welcome. This class is very hands-on.
Description of class: Learn the fundamentals of calligraphy, what
it is and how to do it. We will be practicing basic strokes and
learning a basic hand. Best practices and materials for further
learning will also be discussed. Class cost includes a dip pen with
nib, a small jar of ink, paper, and a handout. Should students
bring anything: Students should bring a chair if needed and $10 to
cover supplies.

Description: Class fee of $20. Come learn how to make lampworked
beads from two of our most experienced and talented glass
magicians! Fee is to cover materials. At the end of class you can
take your bead(s) home with you! (Allow time after class for beads
to cool properly)

The Medieval Dog
Instructor: Lady Dagrun (Runa) Harasdottir
Number of Students: Open class
Description: Man’s companion for thousands of years, what part did
the dog play in day to day life?  We will explore this as well
as husbandry, hunting, superstition, and the types of dogs your
persona would be familiar with.  The modern concept of
individual breeds was not as we see it today.  Dogs were bred
for function.  However, form follows function and there were
certainly distinct groups that had individuals that would be
recognized today.

Safety rules, simple bow identification, instruction on how to
shoot, as well as a chance to practice. Any child registered in the
YAFA token program can earn a level one token if they complete this
Division 1 class.

Campcraft: Knots and Lashings Useful to the
SCA Camper

***NOTE: This is a portion of the body of knowledge for Blatha an
Oir Sergeants candidates in Practical Sciences.
Description: The class will cover rope work that is useful in
loading for events, setting up tents and shades, field repairs to
tents and shades, and construction of temporary auxiliary
structures and camp furniture.  Students are encouraged to
bring a chair.
