The Barony of
Lions Gate and the University of Tir Righ are pleased to
announce the TUTR Spring Session, to be held March 21, 2010
in New Westminster, BC.
  A day devoted to
learning, and sharing of knowledge – come, take some Arts or
Sciences classes!

Gate
Gate
opens at 8:30am; first classes start at 9am.
Site fee: $10.00 for adults; NMS is not applicable for
this event

Day Food
In addition
to the classes, the Barony will also have day food available
for purchase by donation – a selection of sweet and
savory things for breakfast and lunch – soup and
sandwiches, muffins, cream cheese and bagels, fresh
vegetables.

Silent
Auction

Lions Gate is holding a Silent
Auction on March 20th (at Newcomers) and 21st (at this
event). Come view the items, put a bid in – maybe get
something nice to yourself and help the Barony at the same
time. If you have items you’d like to donate to the auction,
please see Lady Myrrim at the hall on either Saturday or
Sunday.

The Shoe Making Workshop was by
pre-registration only, and is now closed.
On-site registration is available for the others classes;
please see the session dean, Dame Elena de Maisnilwarin, at
Newcomers on Saturday, or at the event on Sunday morning.
Note that instructors may cancel their classes if minimum
registration is not met so it’d best to register as soon as
possible.

banquet cook, will take students through the steps to
planning a successful feast for 100+ people. HL Kenzie draws
upon past feasts for direct examples of what to do, and what

Class Description: Have you ever looked at award charters
and thought, “Wow, I could NEVER do that…”?
Wrong.  As a
self-described “non-artist”, I assure you that virtually
anyone can successfully paint a charter worth
presenting. 
Students will learn basic gouache painting technique,
repairing mistakes, shading, blending, re-lining and some
embellishment if time permits.  There will be a short
lecture followed by lots of time for painting.  Students will receive all
necessary materials to complete a charter.

Students may bring gouache
paints, brushes and palettes if they have them, along with
note-taking
materials.

Class Description: We will make a batch of basic
non-perfumed soap using lye and solid vegetable
oil.  Students
will get to take home a cake of soap made in class, which
will need to be cured, and then can be used for washing in
about four weeks.
Students should bring apron and/or rubber gloves if you have
them
.

Class Description: Learn how to draft your own period tunic
– emphasis will be on how to draft right onto fabric from
body measurements. Students will receive a handout with
layout and sewing instructions, as well as in-class
assistance with drafting and cutting out of their garment.
Students should bring chalk or marking pencil, measuring tape
and scissors. If you want to start handsewing, please also
bring needle and
thread.
Fabric
requirements: fabric must be prewashed. You will need 60″
wide; bring twice the desired final length plus a few inches
for hems. So, if you want a tunic 60″ (150cm) long, please
bring 140″ (3.2 metres) of prewashed
fabric.
Pre-registration is not required, however,
students must
bring fabric.

tablet weaving: how to read a simple pattern, thread cards,
and how to vary their pattern by manipulating their cards.

Class Description: A class in which students will learn a
little of the history of the Celts along with an introduction
to basic Celtic Knotwork using the grid method. Students will
be taught how to make knots more interesting by using stops
and varying line width and color. Instructor will supply
graph paper, pencils, coloured pencils and
erasers.

students will learn how to perform a 13th century braiding
technique using the fingers of both hands. In Medieval times
these fine braids had a number of different uses including:
clothing decoration, purse strings, bodice strings, tags
under seals, slings and more. A pair of small scissors would
be handy for students to bring. Minors 12 and older
welcome.

learn how t use a jeweller’s saw. Cut metal! This could lead
to greater things like your own cloak clasp, a circlet, or
maybe even a weird dangley thing on your cell phone. Bring
eye protection if you don’t wear glasses; bandaids if 
you are prone to hurting yourself.

Class Description: Repousse is done on
thin sheets of tin, silver or gold using bone or metal tools
to bring out the three-dimensional design for book covers,
icons and shringes. It is also known as “chase work” when
worked on thicker sheets of metal for jewellery. We will work
on tin as is appropriate for beginners and SCA budgets. Our
project could be a mini-book cover, or pendant. No hammering
or strenous work  – this is a gentle art.

Shoe Workshop – pre-registration deadline has

Class Description: This class will
present the basic processes of developing patterns and making
a pair of turnshoes. The student will receive a shoemaking
toolset (to keep), including needles, thread, awl, stitching
last, patterns, instruction handouts and materials for a pair
of turnshoes. This class will cover simple shoes and low
ankle boots but will not cover high top boots or a shoe with
heels. STUDENTS
MUST PRE-REGISTER.
There is no drop-in
on the day of the class. Students are recommended to bring
work clothes or an apron to keep their garb
clean.
CRITICAL-STUDENT PROVIDED MATERIAL: an
outline drawing of each of the student’s feet MUST be sent to
