The True Arte of Defense & Calladum Competition

June 25, 26 & 27

Shire of Coeur du Val, Corvallis, Or.

North Albany Park, Benton County

Again the sound of steel rings through the Valleyâ??s heart, as rapiers and swords cross in combat competition and entrants for the Shireâ??s Calladum meet to contest for prizes, honour and valor.

This year’s scenarios will be based around the events that took place in and around Paris in the latter part of 1572. Some of the story will be taken from history and some from Alexandre Dumas’s book La Reine Margot (Queen Margot) written in 1845 which has a strong basis in historical fact and flavored with the heroism and romance Dumas is famous for. The focus will be on the adventure, not on the religious persecution of the times. This will not be Huguenots vs. Catholics, but instead Company vs. Company where sometimes a Company represents the Huguenots and other times the Catholics.

There will be a variety of melee scenarios ranging from everyone for themselves to company on company engagements with a variety of goals and win conditions. Prizes will be awarded for the Tourney victor, the winning Captain, most Chivalric and most Valorous.

Organized Rapier Companies and School’s of Defense are encouraged to attend. Every effort will be made to keep groups together within the goal of having fair teams. If you are interested in being one of the two Captains please contact me directly.

Calladum Competition Categories: Archery, Arts, Bardic, Heavy & Light combat, Rapier, Scholarship and Science.Prizes will be awarded for each category, so come join the populace and vote for your choice. There is no residency requirement for the Calladum Competition â?? only a letter of intent and competition in five of the eight categories, and of course, non-Calladum competition is welcome in one or more of the categories.

This yearâ??s rapier scenarios, (one of which will qualify as part of the Calladum), will be based around the events that took place in and around Paris in the latter part of 1572, combining a strong basis in historical fact and the romantic heroism in the story of La Reine Margot (Queen Margot). This yearâ??s melee scenarios range from everyone for themselves to company on company engagements, varying goals and winning conditions. Prizes will be awarded for the Tourney victor, the winning Captain, and Most Chivalric and Most Valorous.
