The following are
descriptions from the teachers for their classes to be held at
Grand Thing.
Dame Madrun –
The class: Tablet weaving: Finnish Diagonals (3hrs.) (Madrun
Gwehyddes)
This class will explore the Iron Age use of the “Egyptian

Finnish weavers c. 1100-1300. Students will learn to warp the
tablets, weave several designs, and how to read pattern
drafts. Max. 6 students. Students should bring a chair,

archaeological finds at
Oseburg and Mammen and utilize designs from the finds at Mammen
(all 9th-10th
C AD). No skills in embroidery are needed to start with
Norse needlework.
Please bring your scissors, close-up glasses if you need
them. If you
have a small embroidery hoop bring it, otherwise the instructor
will supply one.

Preserved foods of the Viking Age
We will discuss and sample various preserved food products that
would have been possible in Viking Age Scandinavia, as well as go
over how to make them, where to source ingredients and
cultures. We will also go over how these food products would
have fit into daily life during the period, and how you can make
use of them while camping at events.
If people could bring cups/plates/forks for sampling that would be
great. No cost.
New this year I am going to make one of the barns available for
“camping without a tent” as a Baronial travel fund raiser. There
are (50) 12′ x 12′ stalls available $20 each. They are nice and
clean, just lay down a tarp and some carpets and you are all set.
Even if it rains you will not have to pack down a wet tent. Contact
me if you want to reserve one of these spots. Baron Ivon
Drengr – gebarber2001@yahoo.com.
The Barony of Stromgard invites
you to the ninth Annual Grand Thing. This is a period event
focusing on Nordic and Irish traditions of the Viking era with
fighting, contests, games, and a Grand Feast! Based on the
“Thing” where free
people of the community would meet and settle issues of
law.
PRIZE FOR BEST NORSE ENCAMPMENT!
“WITNESS!”
Fighting: Multi-Weapons
Tournament with five weapons styles (sword & shield, axe &
shield, spear & shield, two-handed axe, and two-handed spear)
with a Master Grendal Damascus Axe as prize, a Memorial Great Axe
Tournament (bring word fame of the fallen in song, prose, or saga
to enter), a Monastery Raid (where you keep what booty you can
escape with), and a Domination Tourney where not just your skill is
tested but your courage and valor as well. Can you withstand the
Storm of Steel?
NEWS!!!
New for the fighters – we are
going back to the original multiweapons tournament with matched
weapons made by Knights of An Tir. Our Champion Sir Daegar
Fairhair and Sir Dublin O’GuinnSilverwolf will each make a matching
set of two-handed spears. Master Nikolai Grendal Gornych and
Duke Tiernan mor dal Cais with each make a matching set of
two-handed axes. Sir Ataias ek Paralatae will make
matched sets of one-handed spears and axes.
Also Sir Dublin tells me the
theme for this years Monestary Raid is “The Blood of Heroes” four
man teams will raid; one armed with sword and shield, one armed
with axe, one armed with spear, and one unarmed but ready to carry
away the loot. Put together your team before the event or get
matched up on site. It should be fun with loot for
everyone.
