Samhain, Saturday November 9th The Shire of Glyn Dwfn

The Shire of Glyn Dfwn welcomes all to join us to celebrate the Thinning of the Veil!
In many cultures a celebration of the lives that have gone ahead of us is held in the late fall, a time to to remember our fallen and departed and to consider our own mortality. People often believed that the barrier between the realm of the spirits and the realm of the living was thinnest – secrets could be revealed, loved ones contacted and lost ones guided on their way.  In some cultures it is a time for caution and for others a time to rejoice, but for all it is a time to reflect on our connection to the past, present and future!

This year we look forward to an event filled with activities that embrace the theme of the Thinning of the Veil, where things may not always be as they seem!
  What we will have is:
  • Combat!; Heavy, Rapier and Cut&Thrust competitions! We will hold our Rapier Defender tournament; vie for the honor to represent the Shire!
  • Snacks: a sumptuous day board; please add to our offerings with those of your own!
  • Cooking competition: TWO subtlety contests – appetizer AND dessert!
  • Classes! Multiple arts and sciences, practical and theoretical knowledge abounding!! Enter our A&S Defender tournament by teaching a class and sharing what you know!
  • Bardic: An open call for folks to share a spooky story or haunting tune!
  • Dancing: A masquerade dance with lessons provided before hand, basic masks (provided as a site token that you can customize during the afternoon) or wow us with your special creation!
  • Live Music: A special musical guest!
  • Glyn Dwfn’s legendary feast – you will not go home hungry or less than delighted!
  • And finally, we invite all our guests to bring a remembrance of those that have gone before us – those in our SCA family as well as those who would have been family if they had found us before they departed.  We invite you to bring a small likeness, keepsake or memento to set in a place of honor for the evening.

The Shire of Glyn Dwfn is sensitive to the thin line that the SCA walks between recreation and cultural appropriation. We invite you therefore to bring your stories and learnings of how the culture you represent honors their fore-bearers.  Let us come to understand together the way that our cultures respect and assist their dead on their spiritual journey.

Subtlety Contests!

A subtlety competition at Samhain in the Shire of Glyn Dwfn!

Show your curious, creative, culinary craftsmanship!

For those that don’t know, a sublety is a dish disguised as something else.

A boars head of baked bread, a mouse made of cheese feasting on an apple made of quince paste, or a plate of fruit arranged to look like an illuminated manuscript.

Entries will be judged by their Alpine Highnesses on 3 categories:

  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • Taste

Please also include a list of ingredients with your entry.

Both sweet and savory entries are welcome.

So get creative, and get cooking!

Dayboard Lunch

Not feeling artistically inclined enough to enter the subtlety competition?

Consider contributing to the Samhain Dayboard Instead! This is the perfect season for rustic homey cooking, so bring your favorite dishes to share.

Please be sure to include an ingredients list for those with food allergies.

Tournament Information

Rapier Defender Tournament

My time as Glyn Dwfn’s Rapier Defender is drawing to a close. As such there shall be a tournament at Samhain to choose my successor. To honor the season I have devised a suitable format.

Since Samhain is the day of the thinning veil and things not being as they appear, fighters shall have to show their prowess with an off hand that requires subtlety and deception. In this double round robin tournament, you must hold the field with a cloak for your off hand. Otherwise it’s bring your best.

I look forward to seeing the skill and panache of our rapier community.

YIS,
Lord Samwell Langdon, Rapier Defender of Glyn Dwfn.

We will also have a Cut & Thrust Tournament and Heavy Tournament!

There is something for everyone so please join us!

Youth and Family Activities

The Honored Dead

Those who have passed are never entirely gone and Samhain is a liminal time when the veil between worlds is thin enough for them to be near. We are using this time to celebrate those who have passed. We invite everyone to bring a image or small keepsake/ token to represent anyone who was either part of our family or would have been if they had discovered us before passing. We will have a place of honor to put these images up and celebrate their lives and continued guidance!

In keeping with the many traditions of this season we will also hosting a MASQUERADE! Basic masks will be made available, and some decorating materials as well, though we encourage our guest to bring their own masks, show off your skills and present us with your terrors too!

BARDIC

Song-singers and Storytellers; hear our call! We have set aside a time for you sing us your spooky songs and thread your tales of terror! Out theme is Things Are Not What They Seem and The Thinning of the Veil this year. Because of how many things we hope to have packed into a day, we ask that your songs be not over 5 minutes and your stories be less than 7 minutes, let’s give as many bards and aspiring minstrels a chance to shine as we can!!!

Classes Offered

A&S CHAMPIONSHIP

As Samhain draws nearer, so does the end of my tenure as the Arts and Sciences Defender of Glyn Dwfn. All those Gentles (Good and…Otherwise) who would like to vie for the honor of becoming the next A&S Defender of Glyn Dwfn will need to prepare and teach a class at Samhain.

Your class can cover any area of study within the framework of the SCA. And this year, we will be adding a category to the judging rubric. If the topic of your class works with the overall theme of the event, you have a potential to earn bonus points. This year, the theme of the event is “Thinning of the Veil, where things may not always be as they seem.”

If you would like to teach a class at Samhain this year, PM me by Friday (Facebook: Amy Harper or post to the Samhain page!), October 11th with your class’ name, and whether or not you intend it as entry to vie for the title of A&S Defender of Glyn Dwfn. If you’d simply like to teach a class without entering the competition, you have the same deadline. This is just for class names and intent. I will ask for the class descriptions at a later date.

And as always, please do not hesitate to post questions below.
