Earn your Novus I Diploma with Hartwood and the University of Tir Righ!

Hartwood and the University of Tir Righ invite all those new and old to a series of online classes on the basics of the Society for Creative Anachronism. For three Friday nights in August instructors will teach and lead discussions on subjects such as Society structure, how to handle your first event, and what activities we engage in.

This is the second of three sessions. Information is also available for the First and  Third sessions.

Classes Offered

7pm – 8pm: Keeping busy: What to do in the SCA – with Aspasia Bevilacqua

What do we do? Everything, because there is no audience and we all participate! This is a quick overview of activities beyond martial arts and sewing circles, and how you, too, can be a part of this hugely creative hobby.

By the end of the class, students will:

    • recognize the activities available;
    • understand that they may volunteer as a voice herald with minimal instruction;
    • understand how to become involved in each of them;
    • understand how every area of interest supports and is supported by other areas;
      and
    • understand that modern activities have their origins in history, and how modern activities translate to medieval.

8:15 – 9:15: Identity crisis: What is a persona? – with Guencenedl ben Madudain

What is a persona and why do we have them? In this class, students will explore the idea of persona development within the SCA.

By the end of the class, students will:

    • understand the concept of having a persona;
    • understand the SCA guidelines on selecting a name and how to find name resources;
    • recognize the relationship between persona and name;
    • know the difference between a persona and a back-story;
    • have concepts on how to select a persona;
    • be able to suspend disbelief to interact with others.
