Introduction to the art of dagger making, where to look for
suitable materials, hands on class work, students should leave with
the necessary skills to complete a basic dagger. Materials will be
supplied which will allow students to make their very own dagger.
Students: Please wear old work clothing that can get dirty.

Introduction to the Hammer

An introduction to some of the techniques used in reproduction
armouring, concentrating on basic hammer techniques. This class will
cover basic sinking and re/aising techniques, as well as the
differences between types of hammers. This class will also cover
converting commonly available hammers into types more appropriate for
armouring use, and a brief overview of other tools needed (Stakes,
anvils, stumps etc) to accomplish various hammer work.

Symbols, Sigils, and Superstitions

one should bite their tongue when hiccupping, and why you should
pinch your earlobe if your ears ring and a look at symbols and
sigils, and their meanings.

Middle Eastern Clothing: Exploring Images

Halima al-Rakkasa
Turban or keffiyeh? What’s with the veil? And just how period is
the “ghawazee coat” anyway? We will closely examine some 70 or more
images, from carvings to manuscripts that range from before the birth
of Muhammed to well into the Ottoman Empire… in hopes of answering
those questions and more.

from 700 to 1600 A.D, plus accessories

Introduction To Heraldry

Students in this class will learn the basics of what heraldry is
in the SCA. We will focus on the components of the heraldic device,
discuss badges & names, and go over the submissions process for
people choosing to register their SCA names and armory. We will
also talk briefly about checking for conflict, heraldic display and
voice heraldry. Resources for name research, design help etc. will
be included in the handout.

Black Mountain Belt Pouch
Aaron of the Black Mountains
Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting leather. Specifically,
crafting a Black Mountain Belt Pouch. The class will inform you
step-by-step, on how to create a leather (belows type) belt pouch.
Included: Two types of leather / Handout with detailed, step by step
instructions. / Pouch pattern to keep. / all sinew, dyes, rivets and
buckles needed.
Learn: Lay out techniques / Cutting hints / Punching and drilling
holes / Gluing skills / Sewing with a blunt needle / Rivets types and
installation / Buckle and strap assembly construction / Dying,
stamping and edge waxing Following the step-by-step instructions, as
well as the instructor’s guidance will result in a useful, period,
belt pouch.

The Destreza – The Spanish “Magic Circle”

This course documents the form and useage of the Spanish school as
documented by Narvaez and Thibault. How is the Circle drawn? What is
the meaning of the lines? How did the Spanish sword and its useage
differ from mainstream Europe? The course will demonstrate the theory
and practice of the Circle and explain why it was thought to be
“magic”. This is a hands on class.

Middle Eastern Clothing: Exploring Construction

Stuck on stripes for Arabic clothing? Join us! We will explore
construction techniques of Middle Eastern clothing for various times,
including fibres, weaves, and colors. Some sample clothing will be on
hand.

Designing Your Device

Would you like to design your own heraldic device, but find heraldry
to be complicated and more than a little intimidating? Let Owyn
simplify and de-mystify the process. Topics to be discussed will
include your design options, some basic heraldry rules and terms, and
submission procedures. Bring your questions and we’ll try to find
some answers.

Lute Music For Guitar Players

Stephen of Hunmanby
Learn how to give your guitar a period persona for SCA events – a
lute. It’s really not hard. The class covers: Brief history of the
guitar and lute. Lute tunings. Lute tablatures. Sources of lute music
in tablature and modern notation.
Class size: min 1, max 8

Introductory Armour Hardware Construction

This class will cover some of the materials needed to make proper
replica hardware to support period looking armour. The class will
concentrate on a few simple types of “hardware” such as hinges,
buckles and washers. In addition to a “hands-on” construction of a
hinge or buckle, the class will cover sources to determine what style
of hardware would be appropriate to the harness that is under
construction.

Medieval Dance Sampler

Tita the Wanderer
We will focus on learning and remembering four dances:
Rufty-Tufty, Sellenger’s Round, Korobuska, and Black Nag. These
dances are often seen in Tavern Nights, Feasts, and Revels, and will
prepare any student to feel confident in a dance setting. Students
will learn to identify these dances by name, music, and steps. After
learning the dances there will be a brief “review” in order to cement
them in memory.

Making A Cavalier Hat
4 hours – 2 hrs & 2 hrs

Beginning construction of a Cavalier hat. A buckram base will be
provided (pre-wired). Please bring scissors, thread, pins, needle,
thimble and approximately 3/4 yard of material to cover the hat.
Please note that the first two hours of this class will be taught on
Saturday afternoon followed by the last two hours of the class on
Sunday morning. This will give the students more time to complete
their hat. Both parts of the class must be taken. However, you only
pay the $15.00 once.

The Art of Courtly Love (as written by Andreas Capellanus)

Curious about the subject? Come learn the way it was done in the
late 12th Century. Includes; 43 rules, etiquette among the nobility,
and even a “Dear Abby” section. It is not as you may think it was.
Mature subject matter. Please bring an open mind.

Bargello and Related Stitchery

Basic Greek folk dances will include Hasaposerviko, Tzamiko and
Kalamatiano. Wear comfortable shoes, preferably with cushioning, less
than floor-length garb.

Late Period Doublets for Fencing

This class will cover styles, cuts and materials for SCA
fencing-legal doublets for men and women from 1550-1630. It is a
lecture course with examples, pictures and handouts.

Hairnet Construction Techniques

Halima al-Rakkasa
With the techniques learned in this class, you will be able to
make a hairnet to match any outfit, and suitable for a wide variety
of time periods. You will make a seven-loop fingerloop braid for the
“headband”. And you will create a section of netting to learn casting
on, knotting technique, and “increasing”. (Those making fishnets and
hammocks use these same techniques on a larger scale.)

A look at the history of dogs in the Middle Ages and some ideas on
having fun with your own dog in the Current Middle Ages. Topics will
include ‘The Well Dressed Dogge’, ‘The Right Dogge for Your Persona’,
and ‘A Good Name for a Dogge’. Each student will be able to take home
an imaginary dog suitable to their persona.

Physical Evolution of Rapier Combat

This course will document and discuss, with demonstrations, the
evolution of rapier combat from the early 1500’s to the late 1600’s,
touching on all the major masters. It will show how changing theory
and practice affected physical changes in the design of the rapier
and how these changes then promulgated more changes in the rapier’s
use.
This course is designed to give the student the widest overview of
rapier technique and its origins, as well as showing which rapier
designs are applicable to specific periods, and how form fits
function. This is a lecture class with demonstrations.

Ages. Learn pavannes, bransles, galliards and other court dances.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring a
mug for water.

Beginning Shoe Construction

Eriu of Tlachtga
This class will teach you how to make a leather medieval shoe that
is suitable for many personas. This pattern is also easily adaptable
so that you can alter the time period a little. Included in your
handout will be a full size pattern in several sizes (including
children’s) so that you will be able to make additional pairs with no
problem. Materials will be included in the class fee (including
leather, padding, etc.)

Articulation Theory

A discussion on the issues inherent in articulation design, the
various types of articulation and which types are appropriate for
specific uses. This class will also cover the articulation techniques
that were used in specific time periods, and the trade-offs that they
represent, as well as some of the technological issues that drove
their development.

Speaking Forsoothly (for beginners)

A beginner class on Speaking Forsoothly as it relates to your
personae development and the Medieval Moment. Helpful terms,
dialects and how to curse in the Medieval way.

Articulated Joint Design
2 hours
Alexander-Philippe de Bergerac
This class will cover the basics of how to measure for, and design an
articulating joint appropriate to the 14th to 17th century. The
students will finish this class with cardboard templates that will
work to allow construction of articulated metal armour for either a
knee or elbow joint.
Prerequisites: Preferred to have taken Articulation Theory, or strong
background in armor theory and/or application.

General Information

Site and Meal Information
The site fee for this event is $10.00. This is not the Ithra
registration fee. Included in this fee is lunch for both days and the
Saturday Evening Feast. Do not pay this fee with your Ithra
registration.
Please pay it when you arrive on site. You can pay in cash or by
cheque. If paying this fee by cheque, make the cheque out to “False
Isle”. Please remember to bring your eating gear, trenchers, goblets
or mugs and eating utensils. You may also wish to bring a pottery or
glass mug for the hot beverages.

All activities take place at Brooks School in Powell River. This
includes the feast and revel on Saturday evening.

The site is dry. NO ALCOHOL on site.

General Information
Persons wishing to enroll in the University of Ithra must be
serious students of medieval arts and sciences. Membership in the SCA
is not necessary. All fees must be paid in advance before class
sessions begin.
Students must agree to obey all rules and regulations as set forth by
the Regents and enforced by the Provost, faculty and staff.
All participants at Ithra must make some attempt to dress in
pre-17th Century costume. If you don’t have one, call the Registrar.
An instructor receives Ithra credit for the class, the first time
it is taught. A Masters Degree will be awarded to instructors who
teach the same class at three sessions. Instructors also receive a
registration fee waiver
for the session in which they teach.
All grades are pass/fail, decided by the instructor. Anyone who
does not attend class is a “no show”. Any appeal to a grade must be
made to the Board of Proctors. Notification will be given only to
those who attend but fail a class.
No classes may be audited. This is a long-standing policy of
Ithra. Class limits are chosen by the instructor. Though the size of
a class may be expanded in need, this is not a routine or acceptable
practice.

The Matriculation Fee, which covers cost of the Compendium and
maintaining the records of classes the student attains, is $2.00 and
is only paid the first time the student registers for an Ithra class.

The Registration Fee, which covers operating costs, is variable from
session to session depending on the various costs. If fees do not
accompany the registration form, you will not be registered. If you
register late and the classes are filled, you will receive a refund.
Supplies are handled by the instructors.

Accomodation
Accomodation and breakfast will be provided for $2.00 per person per
night. This fee will go to your host. The host’s name, address and
telephone number will be provided. We will attempt to arrange
pet-free or non-smoker accommodation for those who are allergic to
pets and smoke. If you are travelling with a group, please let the
registrar know so that you and your companions can be housed close to
each other. You must provide your own
sleeping bags and other gear. If you need this service, please

Ferry Pickup: This service is provided for University attendees who
are travelling by ferry and need to be picked up. There is no
