Announcing!!! Candlemas contests are as follows:

Dragon’s Laire Scribal Guild apprentice level challenge!

HL Anne Brynley, DL Scribal Guildhead, presents to all members of the Dragon’s Laire Scribal Guild:

We will be holding the apprentice level painting/illumination challenge at Candlemas.  The criteria is quite simple for completing this challenge:  1) Agree to provide own tools and materials; 2) Describe what is parchment; 3) Name three different methods of applying gold to parchment or paper.; 4) Paint a small design using gouache paint (approx. 4″ x 4″) describing what colors were used and why.; 5) Describe the tools needed for completing an illuminated manuscript.

Please bring your painted design and place it on the display table.  The design can be of anything but must be painted using gouache paint and must be on paper or parchment.  Sometime during the day you will be asked the challenge questions by a Scribal judge.  Upon completion, you will receive your guild apprentice bead.

For those not interested in doing the challenge, you are still encouraged to bring a painted design of your choice for display upon the table.

Flames Art Contest hosted by THL Rycheza z Polska Dragon’s Laire

Artwork should be your own original work, but may have been published in
another publication. All mediums accepted, however, it must be
re-producable in a two dimensional Black and White representation for
use in The Flames. So what does that mean? A nice pen and ink drawing
or one in charcoal or simple pencil or a painting in black and white
would be ideal. Color in the work is acceptable but if someone took a
black and white photo, would nuances be lost? A carving, metalwork or
other three dimensional works would need to be photographed. (We just
haven’t got the holograph working properly yet.) Photography featuring
human subjects will require signed model releases, see the Chronicler
for more info and forms.

Subject matter should either have a medieval theme, such as dragons,
castles, etc. or an SCA theme, such as making garb or demos. Art may
also be purely decorative such as Celtic Knotwork. Art intended for the
cover should be at least 5 inches by 5 inches, incidental art may be
smaller.

The editor of The Flames reserves the right to adjust the representation
of the piece to fit within the newsletter. This would primarily take the
form of shrinking or enlarging the piece to fit available space.
