Arts & Sciences

Rather than focusing on one major project, we’d like you to bring out examples of everything you do, and we’ll have an “Athaneum-style” A&S geek-fest.
Guidelines:
  • Everyone is encouraged to set up a display. If you don’t want to enter the competition, that’s fine….you won’t be judged. Just be prepared to sit for a while and geek with your friends. Please let me know if you plan to display but not compete…just so I know how many tables to set up.
  • If you do want to enter the competition, you will have a chance (probably 15 to 20 min) to talk to the judges. This is YOUR time, so plan how to use it well. The judges will, in part, be looking for enthusiasm and willingness to teach your art.
  • If you wish to enter the competition, you will need to notify Their Excellencies of your intention to compete (please copy me too). An Email or FB message is fine.
  • Written documentation is always good, and well-researched documentation can turn a good display into a great display. But don’t get too stressed out over it.
  • If you want to do a performance piece as part of your A&S display, let me know so we can set up a time for it.
Any questions? Ask me.
So blow the dust off of all those projects from two years ago and let’s see what everybody is up to.
Cheers!
Hrodnavar

Archery

The challenge will be of three rounds, with a tie-breaker if needed. The Archery line can accommodate 8 archers at a time, though I would like to keep the line less populated, depending on how many entrants there are. Numbers will dictate this, as I have a 90 minute window, though I know no one wishes to be stuck anywhere for 90 minutes when there will be so many people to talk to, and things to see.
At the end of each round, or set of shooters per round, I will walk with the archers to verify points. Round 3 will be the only time individual shots may be “verified” per shot, if needed (split lines).
Total points for round 1 an 3 are 33, plus the 2nd round, Royal Round points. Total time should not exceed 80 minutes, though I expect it to be less than an hour, depending on “arrow collection time,” and contests number.
——————————-
The Challenge of Patience:
1). The first round will be 3 targets at varied range, with 6 arrows total, in 3 minutes, scoring at 1, 2, and 3 points, at 20, 30, and 40 yards respectively. Archers may choose any of the three targets, each shot. One must only hit the bail to score, though there will be a target on the bail to help one visually key-in their shot, as well as for their own personal accomplishment, and the cheers of the crowd.
Total points for this round are 18, if all 6 arrows hit at 40 yards. 12 contests with 4 shooters per set should take 20-30 minutes, with shooting, scoring, and arrow collection.
——————————-
The Challenge of Speed:
2). The second round will be a timed “Royal Round of One Minute,” at 30 yards. Multiple shooters per minute, with the first arrow allowed to be nocked and pulled “at the ready.”
Total points in this round are dictated by the archers speed and accuracy in 60 seconds. This round should take less that 20 minutes, depending on arrow collection.
——————————
The Challenge of Accurancy:
3). The third round will be a 1 vs 1 game of “Tic-Tac-Toe,” with 6 arrows per contestant. Each square counts as only as “1 point,” with the frst arrow in that square taking that point, so two shots to the same square do not give each person a point, or the same archer a second point–first hit takes the point. Two arrows can, however, be used in the same square by seperate archers to complete a line–example; the center square may be used by both archers. A line completion gives 3 points, regardless of any other arrow occupying the space.
The lowest scoring person from the first two rounds (point total) are to choose their opponent, and take the first shot. Next round, next lowest contestant who has not shot repeats the process.
With strategy, an archer could choose to compete against a higher scoring person to “block their progress” to some degree.
Split lines will be determined immediatly after the shot, if needed, with arrow placing in the square it is closest to.
If there is an odd number of contestants, either I or another will shoot as a destructive bye.
Total points for this round are 15, if an archer is first to shoot each square, and completes 3 lines–this allows for an archer to “catch-up” in points. This will be the longest round. 30 minutes, if there are 6 matches/12 archers.
————————–
4). If there is a tie, there will be a shoot-off, one arrow each at the furthest target, 40 yards. Best shot wins–with a bulls-eye target on the bail. If no one scores, it moves to the second target, 30 yards, same process, and repeats until someone scores best shot, closest to center.
—————————
“*” For those who do not wish to compete for Champion, but wish to partciate, I will be casting three “arrow-heads” as medallions out of copper for “gold,” aluminum for “silver,” and bronze, for… well… “bronze.”Or similiar metals.
I may also have a prize for “best-shot,” if time allows for creation.
In service,
Rowland of Jerago Con Orago
Archery Champion of the Barony of Adiantum

Cut & Thrust

Cut & Thrust will be have an appropriate List style for the number of entrants. Each bout will be fought First to 3 Non-Consecutively Placed Blows.

Rapier

Rapier will be fought as a Prowess Tournament with each round being fought in a different style. The first round will be Single Sword. The second round, Dual Wield. The third round will be fought Sword and Defensive item. Scores will be tallied and a Finals of Bring Your Best, if needed.
